I had my battery checked out and registers 10.5 volts. Was told that when gets to @ 10 should replace.
Why does the instrument panel read higher on volts? Usually 12.8 - 14.1.
What would be best replacement battery as I have read many conflicting posts regarding RED TOPS? Thanks.
When you turn the key to ON, without starting the engine, the volts read is the battery, but when the engine is running the volts read is the output of the charging system.
As far as a replacement battery, everyone has an opinion, just like they do on air induction and exhaust. Do your research on line and make your best decision. The only advise I'd offer, is that due to the location of the ECM (directly beneath the battery well), I would go with a gel type battery. If that's an Optima, or an interstae, or a Delso, its your call. Just remember, when it seems your veete has been taken over by gremlins and you get a bunch of seemingly uincorrelate DTC's, its either loose grounds or the battery.

If you are checking the voltage at the battery terminals, without the engine running, it should be at least 12 Volts. If it is below that, you have a dead cell in the battery or a short. I normally see a lower voltage on the DIC than at the battery.
It should read above 12 V when the car is running and the alternator is charging the battery.
