i was just wondering how many of you guys have had a rear main seal leak. i was getting ready to put a clutch in my car. pull the clutch and flywheel off and wal-la a leaking rear main seal. most likely the cause of my clutches demise. i might understand if it was a high mileage car but it's a 99 with only 9000 miles. oh well what are ya gonna do.
Thanks for the report though. I was wondering when/if someone would find a leaking rear main. Does it look like a pain to change? If you've already changed it let us know how it went.
well it's a dealer only item. i didn't get to that point untill about 1:30 and all the dealers closed at 12 or 1. so i didn't put it in yet. it doesn't look too bad. it is in something like a plate that is bolted to the block. unlike to old small blocks. i'll let you know how it goes on monday evening.

You may have inadvertently answered your own question..
A 1999 w/ only 9K miles on it.. Garage queens are great, but sometimes you aren’t doing your car any favors..
Case in point; I bought my 2000 used w/ 13K miles on it.. It has had the main seal replaced by the original owner.. It sat for almost a year at 10K miles, and when he went to sell the car, BAM, main seal went bad..
So the lesson here may be that in the long run it's better to drive it than to worry about racking up the miles..

oh yea i've got the drive train already out. so the my car is stuck at work till monday night. i under stand what your saying about garage queens, the previous owner had like 30 some odd cars and never drove the vette. but it is getting driven now already put like 1500 mile on it in one and a half months.
I'm in the midst of a rear main seal replacment and am having some difficulty getting the seal in without damaging it! Seems to be a fairly delicate procedure. I have the rear cover aligned and so far in every attempt to install the seal disaster strikes and I bend the inner lip. I don’t want to spring the $350 for the GM tool (essentially a tapered cone that bolts on the end of the crank to prevent the installation difficulty I’ve been experiencing. Anybody had success in installing their rear main seal without the GM tool or have a cheap source to go out and buy one?
