Default side view mirror loses adjustment

Every time I close the a door the respective side view mirror is knocked out of adjustment. What's the fix for this?

Is the mirror housing still tight at the pivot point, near where it is attached to the door? They tend to come loose.

Not sure if I understand what to check for secure but the entire assembly is securely mounted on door. With very light force I can re-adjust the mirror by pushing it back in place. Sounds like it's ratcheting inside, probably stripping gears if there are any in there.

In that your profile says you have a 97 I am going to "assume" the mirror is moving from side to side as if you were folding it in to go through a car wash. If that is the case there is NO fix for it other than to buy a new unit and have it painted. I know this because that is what happened to my 97(still under warranty). Seems there was a TSB on this a while back. Be sure you are sitting down when you get the price for this fix.
I hope I am wrong but...

Well I guess I'm lucky in that respect. It is the actual mirror losing it's adjustment within the housing. It's as if the adjustment buttons were pushed to move it around. Still, I fear it won't be cheap.
