Does anyone know what, if any, difference in performance the 2000 cam has vs. the cam in the 2001-2004 LS1? The 2000 LS1 was down by 5 HP due to the pup cats, but GM said they got those 5 back plus more in '01 (350 hp) due to better flow (manifold and headers?). Anyone have any ideas?
I have wondered this myself as I have a 2000 hardtop as well. Looking at my Helms manual it shows valve lift as being .472/.479 but doesn't give any other cam specifications. However, I have heard from multiple sources that GM used a slightly larger cam on the 2000 cars (.500/.500 lift) to make up for the pup cats. My car came with a video that explained that the 2000 LEV cars with CA emissions are rated at 340 HP instead of 345...so yes, we are down 5 hp over the 2000 non-CA cars. Whether this is attributable to the camshaft, the pup cats (or both) I don't know.
Yes, I have seen these specs posted before. What bugs me is that the 2000 shop manual shows .472/.479 lift which makes me think I have the '97-'99 cam. One way to find out for sure would be to measure the valve lift using a dial indicator.

Yes, just off of the header / exhaust manifold. Used on certain model years, notably 2000 and 2001; also dependent of location car was built for (California, etc.)
For 2000, GM added the pup cats and went to smaller injectors, to compensate, they went with a more agressive cam. For 2001, they added the smaller cam, better intake and more efficient exhaust to make up for the 5 hp gain. However, may feel the 2000 really made more hp than advertised, esp. those with automatics.

FYI, 99 was the first year of the 26# (smaller) injectors.
What part? The cam specs? The post w/ the detailed cam specs match what I have in my "How to build a high performance LS1/LS6.." book.
Again, I wouldn't bother swaping your cam for a 2000 model, though.
Yes, I was talking about the cam specs. There seems to be two difference sets of opinion/data. One says there was a differenct cam in 2000 vs 2001-04, while another quotes the aforementioned 2000 cam specs as 2001-2004 specs.
I had to replace the engine in my 2000 FRC and went with a 2004 crate engine from the GM dealer parts list vice the original part no. for the 2000. There are no cam specs that I can find for the 2004 crate engine to see what is really there. This new engine is making 330 RWHP after a tune with complete Z06 exhaust, LS6 intake and K&N, but smaller 2000 MAF, injectors, and TB from the original engine. Charlie at A&A said that was very strong for essentially stock, and Andy actually looked to see that the heads were stock (241's) so was wondering what the cam really is.
My 2000 non-California car made 228 with Blackwing and SLP catback as the only mods. On that day it was about 5-10 stronger than several comparable '97-'99 cars. So I think the .500 cam is worth 5-10 maybe. But the 2001's whip it on torque by 20 lb-ft.
Yeah, my shop manual says .479 on the lift too.
But it also show pictures of neat air vents in the fog-light shrouds.
We know those never made production (wish they had).

Before I had my new heads, cam, intake, injectors, longtube headers and high flow cats installed, a baseline was run on my 2000 C5. The car had a Blackwing, WCC powerduct, X-pipe and GHL's. The car put down 309.5 rwhp and 317.4 rwtorque, SAE and smoothed. The tuner told me it was the strongest, basically stock, A4, C5 he had ever tested. Just another data point on the 2000's. My car did not come with pup cats, by the way.
