Default GM Hot cam

Any pros and cons to running this cam? It seems like there are quieter cams that make more power? Any sound files?

thanks!

Forget about the Hotcam. There are a lot better cams out there.

The Hotcam is much more trouble than it's worth. I had one and wish I would have went with a 224/224 .581/.581 114lsa instead.

The Hotcam made nice power and had great track times but was a bear to drive around town and sounded way too radical.

I like AFR's 224/228 cams...

I am actually looking at the "old man" cam but I thought I read that the hot cam did not need spring changes every 10K miles. Is this true of all cams?

thanks

The Hotcam will require the lease amount of spring changes if any at all are needed due to the very small lift.

The bigger the lift the more often you should change your springs. I have a .590 lift and I plan on changing my springs every 15,000 miles which is 3 years of driving for me.

Are there any better springs you can swap to, to avoid changing them every 10k miles? I am also wanting a cam, but spring changes would come up once every 6 months, that is just too often for me. Maybe I should reconsider a H/C car and look at F/I?

It is tricky, the stiffer the spring, the more valve train noise, which is what I am trying to avoid. The more lift, the stiffer springs but the more power. Any idea what is the biggest cam you can run with z06 (or similar rate) springs?

Thanks!

The Hotcam isn't a bad cam, I have it in my 99 SS and I put down 394 rwhp with it, headers and an LS6 intake, and a full compliment of bolt ons. With proper tuning and gears it was very driveable around town, and sounded mean as ****!

The Hot Cam from what I have read is much maligned, but those who have them love them. You can use the LS6 springs and not worry about changing them out every 20K miles, a huge advantage in my book. There was also a recent thread on LS1Tech about long trips, and it looks like a lot of folks who have gone radical on cams are afraid to take the car on a trip. That's not why I bought the car. Basically comes down to fatigues cycles on the springs.

Depending on what you are looking for, you might want to consider a head only swap keeping the stock cam. About a 40 HP gain, perfectly streetable and no large cam issues. I would go with lighter springs though with the stock timing chain if you go this route. Crane roller rockers would get you a little more valve duration as well without a cam change.

That honestly is why I like the hotcam. With tuning its very driveable, and I'm not afraid to take my camaro anywhere. Hell, I've driven it from Michigan to Florida and back with no issues, and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I run LS6 valvesprings, again with no issues, and they perform flawlessly. Yeah, I could have gone bigger but why? I like to drive the car, I don't take it to the track, and I HATE fixing stuff when it breaks or needs to be replaced. Plus, I LOVE how it sounds. I think it was a good choice for me, and honestly I'm considering the same cam for my Corvette for the exact same reasons.

For sounds, go to this link. Look for the description, there are plenty of hot cams there.
