I just bought 1999 (50K miles) and it has a cold engine knock that may last for at least 15 to 30 minutes. It's under extended warranty. However, the dealer says this is normal for that engine and there is nothing they can do to fix it. He did give me something from GMC that stated this and it is expected in this year engine which included many truck.
Also, when I'm going 30 to 40 MPH, at a slow acceleration, it feels like it is missing. The dealer told me this is also normal as the convertor doing something (not exactly sure what he meant).
I have a '99 and in the cold weather, also experiece the knock. It is a common complaint in this model year. I don't notice it in the summer months, and in cooler weather, I just deal with it.
I have never experience any miss at any speed, and definitely would not consider that normal. I'd have another mechanic look at it.
My '99 is noisy when cold also. Most would say piston slap.
I just drive gently until the oil temp is >160
The dealer guy might be talking about the torque converter locking and unlocking. Try just lightly touching the brake with your left foot when this is happening...
Solution is to drive faster or slower, or manually select 3rd.
