A catch can catches oil vapor from the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system, that otherwise would accumulate in your intake, and then eventually coat your cylinders from the top, along with your valves.
The catch can condenses the oil vapor outside of your engine, which will keep the engine running better and should reduce the amount of carbon build up.
