I noticed today that once I got off the highway and onto surface streets the temp gauge ran all the way up to 240. This is the first time I have seen this. I live in New Mexico and it was only 98 today so not that bad and the car sat all day.
Do I need to take it to the radiator shop for a professional flush and possible cleaning or does someone have other ideas?
well, like everybody else on here is suggesting to some other folks w/temp issues...check to see if there's any debris stuck to your radiator or blocking the passage.these cars suck up stuff like one of my old girlfreinds!!! if not that,ck.your fluid levels, including your oil level.ck.you t-stat,too.although how one does that,i have no clue!good luck
Sounds like a nice girlfriend but I only find dead bugs in there, the oil pressure and level are great, and the coolant is at the "full when cold" line (checked when 2.5 hours after driving). I checked the coolant level Sunday after sitting in the garage all day knowing it was going to be a rather warm week and wanted to make sure I was set. I'm with you on the thermostat, I have no idea how to check that, I do know it is not been changed to a 180 degree thermostat.
Any other ideas? I will also look at some of the other posts since I signed back on and see several other cooling issues.
i gotta tell you,i have the stock t-stat,and a big mouth air dam and my temp was at 194ish while cruising in 90 degree heat.last night it actually touched 187 for a while!your's could be water pump issues, something blocked somewhere, too.i read on another forum about a guy who had coolant issues,he cleaned out the tip on the radiator somewhere that drains the coolant(??),down on the bottom somewhere??the dexcool he was using clogged it up a little.p.s.i don't think 240 is to far out of chevy's "normal"range!!

Ok. Thank you very much. I went out and took the top shroud off and ran water over it. Again I only found a few pine needles and bug guts. I will see how it does tomorrow and then when I get back Saturday I may drain it at the plug to see if anything is clogged. Thank you for your help.
I just put in a 175 sat. & my fans are reprogrammed for 190. Today at 88 degrees my car was running at 200-210. Coolant level & oil are "full".
These cars have a serious Run Hot issue.
Make sure your high speed fan is comming on. Both should be running at 230! While on the highway at 89 degrees i read 181 with stock therm and fan control.

Thank you for your comments.

If you're running over 200 on the highway you have a problem. For whatever reason IF the thermostat is open the cooling system isn't keeping up.
To check the thermostat you have to pull it and place in a pan of water. Bring to boil and note at what temp it opens. My money says it's bad and needs to be replaced.
Allen, I have an extra stock Thermostat that you are welcome to use if you find yours is bad. The stupid thermostats have to be purchased as a complete unit (tstat and housing) and run $50ish. If you choose to purchase one, I'd go with a 175 and not the stock one. I put a 160 in when I did the cam.
It was around 100 today on the climate control unit (mid 90's actual temp), AC on high--in stop and go traffic mine never got over 196*. Search for my posts in some other overheating threads and you'll find pics I took yesterday of my radiator. Before cleaning it I was running 220*+ with the AC OFF on the highway, ~90 outside.
