If it is a stick, you'd want to use a small flat blade screwdriver to pop the top plate off (the part with the gear numbers on it). Then, use 2 small flat blade screwdrivers to pry the demon key out. BTW, the key may fly out at a high rate of speed, so if you have a glass top, you might want to remove it first! 
I didn't use this method when I replaced my shifter, and spent 4 hours with a vise-grips trying to get that @$%^ key out.
