I have had some strange hesitation, what some other people think is pre-ignition.... whatever it is, it is anoying. I have replaced plugs, wires, etc. , someone else said it is a vacuum issue and it hasn't gone away. Could a dirty/clogged filter cause any of this?

Stock MAF...... Nylon MAF Ends, screens removed. I remember something about people having issued with removed screens, is this what the issue could be?
Descreened MAF increases the size of the opening. The MAF is allowing more air but not sensing it because the air is flowing slower, hence decreasing your fuel supply for the measured amount of air. You may have problems at idle but may see more SOTP at higher RPM. There are aftermarket MAF that are not screened but are tuned for the area of the opening. My earlier statement about unmetered air, being vacuum leak or whatever still stands, same problem. It's all rocket sience.

Thanks,
David[/QUOTE]...Could a dirty/clogged filter cause any of this? i guess it could, but i've never had an air cleaner that dirty. how many miles on that blackwing. i talked with a "blackwing" guy once and the told me they are good or at least 50K miles. i cleaned my every 2 years (about 10K miles). FWIW
Have you ever sprayed the MAF with no-residue electronics cleaner? if I were you I would certainly try that. Also, as mentioned, there have been many posts about surging/hesitation issues due to screen removal, unless the PCM was tuned for this condition. I can't believe it's the Blackwing restricting the air flow, the surface area on them is just too large. Good luck!

It's only got 24k total on it, and I cleaned it about8-10K ago. We will see. After pulling it to clean it, I have installed new plugs, fixed a vacuum line that the da@n battery ate, new wires, bottle of Red line Fuel cleaner. It SEEMS to be running better. It's funny I have had this combo for 5 yrs now and it just started recently so if it was/is the MAF, it either has stopped metering correctly or just by playing with about everything under the hood it was magically fixed... OK, here is a question for you engine/rocket scientists... If I was having preignition issues, and the last two days it has been 90 deg out with 100% humidity, would that mask the probelm or make it worse? I know cold dense air is best, what issues does warm moist air cause?
Clean the tiny filaments in the MAF with alcohol, JUST BE CAREFUL! Use Q-tips an gently clean the gunk off of then ensure you do not get hung up on the filaments and break them. You will be amazed at what comes off and how much better it will respond when they are clean. Also when you oil your Blackwing let it sit so the excess oil will drain off the filter and not be sucked into your MAF...dirtying it again. Increased throttle response and idle issues can be remedy'd by this as well. This has been mentioned numerous times, and as far as your screen being removed...I as well as others have no issues from doing so. Just a thought for you to try.
