Default Changing Gears?

Hello,

I have a 2001 C-5 A4 and am looking to upgrade from a 2:73 gear to a 3:42 gear. Unfortanatly, I have never tried anything like this before on any car I have had in the past. I use my C-5 as a daily driver and won't be taking it to the track. I was hoping someone here could answer a few questions for me such as,
1. What parts will be needed
2. Is this something someone with average skill can do at home?
3. If a Do It Yourself situation is not an option, any recommendations in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area would be great.
4. Approximate cost of the project. (Self install vs having someone else do it.)

From what I have read on the forum here, I will need a tune when this is completed, (Which is why I think a DIY is not gonna happen.) is there anything else (hidden costs) I should be aware of? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks !!!

IMO not worth DIY unless you have skills and experiance. You can change the ratio with a hand held tuner, but the swap... too much for me. Good luck and there are lots of great shops in NJ see the left side...

try this link for the procedure on how to swap out a rear carrier:

http://mikemercury.home.att.net/342.htm

I understand that there are probably only a couple companies that can actually correctly swap the gears within a carrier; therefore, from what I've been told, you want to swap the entire carrier assembly - IE: don't plan on just swapping the GEARS ONLY like you used to be able to do on older 1960 and 1970 vintage cars.

3.15 and bigger gears normally come in the series 3 carrier. Since you have a 2.73 rear contact DTE. They will take your 2.73 Series 2 carrier as a core and sell you a series 2 carrier with 3.42 gears installed. Or check the C5 parts for sale forum, sometimes you can find a used 3.42 unit for sale.

If I were you I would also install a mild T/C (2800-3200 stall) to go along with my 3.42 gears. A high stall T/C will give you a much bigger performance boost than just gears. Install the gears and the T/C at the same time and save on labor.
