In the course of smokin' a Cobra, I felt a bump into 3rd gear. Since, going into 3rd has resulted in grinding, except when I am stopped or going very slow (<20 MPH). Several folks have told me it could only be a synchro issue.
What is it going to take to get this fixed and who should I look for to do this work and how much can I expect to spend? Does the tranny need to come out for a synchro, and if so, would it be a good time to put in a better clutch?

Any feedback appreciated!
no idea as far as the work in your area.
but yes the tranny has to come out and yes it'd be an opportune time for a clutch swap.
as far as costs go, it'll depend on where you go and what you get fixed and what clutch you swap in .. i think you're biggest part is going to be the labor.
I am having the same issue but with 2nd gear, and mine is not quite as bad as yours,,only grinds when I shift over 4k, so everyday problem it's not,,however still needs to be fixed.
It's probably going to be at least 1k- 1,500 all the labor involved pulling the trans, then seeing what needs to be rebuilt.
I replaced my 3rd gear synchro myself on my m6. Yes, the trans has to come out. Infact, the entire driveline, exhaust, rear cradle, rear, torque tube has to come out. Not for the faint of heart, or if you are on a time table.
I had the exact same problem come up; exactly the same (other than during a street race ). My car was under warranty and was repaired by the GM service tech using this TSB:
Yes pre 01' cars had aluminum shift forks that are prone to bending when thrashed. The 01' and up cars have steel shift forks. The steel forks are the standard replacement now to fix the problem...
