I had my car shipped to New York from Houston and when it arrived, the car showed that the wiper fluid was low. I let it go for about a week and a half and just put in some fluid yesterday. Before this, I noticed that the wiper would be up like it's ready to wipe the window, but just staying there while I drive. I try to use the wiper, but the blades don't move.
Now, after I put the wiper fluid in, and drive for about an hour as I head over to a friend's house. When I reach his house, we do some spirited driving and the wiper starts to come on by itself and I can't shut it down. I try everything to no avail. It's like the intermittent is on and I can't shut it off. At times, it'll stop and then at times, it'll just keep going at varying speeds. I had to drive like this for my 1 hour trip back home wanting to rip the damned blades out! It was killing me to watch my window get raped like that.
I try using the wiper fluid, but nothing comes out. What could cause this? Is there a fuse that I can pull to disarm with wiper for now until I can get some help? Thanks.
i'm no expert but, i did research the 99 service manuals and one thing in common for both your problems is the wiper/washer switch. wipers being on is either the wiper motor, a short to batt. power or the wiper/washer switch. washers inop. is either a restriction or open line somewhere(you would see fluid), washer pump, an open wire or the wiper/washer switch. to check this switch you have to turn the ignition on-turn the wiper switch to off-and disconnect wiper/washer switch connector c219(???). if the motor keeps running the remedy is to replace the switch. the fuse should be #10 in the instrument pnl fuse block located under pass. side floor board. good luck!!!
You got to keep the udders, that are under your wiper cowl, clean. Your probably going to need a new wiper control module. Debris builds up in those udders and water gets into the control module and whammo...........
crazy wipers. Good Luck, Jason
I had the same problem with mine after I had left it parked under the roof overhang of a friends garage. It came a real hard rainstorm and probably several hundred gallons of water poured down on my windshield. When I left after it stopped raining, the wipers became very eratic. They would come on by themselves and run for a minute non stop then shut off. Finally, they came on and wouldn't stop for anything so I pulled the fuse out after bumping the starter till they came down close to the parked position.
I wound up coating the windshield with rain x and didn't even use the wipers till I figured out what was wrong. The factory service manuals directed me to check the switch in the steering column and all that was just fine. The real problem was the idiots designed the wiper motor contols to be housed right down there with the motor itself in that plastic tub that has the udders underneath it so the water backed up and got inside the supposedly sealed aluminum housing.
I took it apart and the motor and everything had rust all inside it. A newly rebuilt motor was cheaper than I had expected, about 35 or 40 dollars but they take the old one for the core so obviously they have a whole racket built in to replace the junk cause they know its going to fail.
I did the work myself and the hardest thing to take off was the actual wiper arms off of the splined studs that they are pressed on to. You need a very small bearing puller with thin fingers to get under the edge of the arm without gouging the aluminum. Once you get past that ,the rest is easy. They say you need all these special tools and things to get the linkage apart which is a bunch of crap. Its just a plastic ball and socket joint that pops apart easily with anything you can improvise to pry on them a little. Just make sure to mark the postions of the wiper arms with some tape on the windshield in relation to how they are pressed on the studs so you can put them back together in the right position. Otherwise the wiper blades won't park themselves where they're supposed to. Hope this helps.
Well it all makes sense. I got the car shipped to NY and it's been sitting out ever since. It's been rained on and everything. It hurts me to see this, but I have not other choice right now and for a while. I'm so glad that I'm not the only one to get this.
Now, what fuse is it and where is it? If I get the fuse box under the passenger side glove box, is there a label for the wipers?
UPDATE: Problem temporarily solved...I found a fusebox diagram online; if anyone is interested in that, here is a link. Always a good thing to keep on your computer for easy access. Now, I have to find some time to take the car into the dealership in order to have it warrentied. I am in no position to tool on my car with not even a screwdriver to my name here. Again, thanks a BUNCH for your help, guys! At least now, I don't have to hear the horrible screeches of wiper on my dry windshield...ouch!
