But, if these slots are used with a floor jack, an extra, and unnecessary, strain is being put on the frame.
But, then again, I could be wrong.
My Service Manual, not Owners Manual, refers to the side rail or shipping slots as "optional vehicle jacking location". If you or a shop uses a frame contact type hoist, it's the only place to place the arms, using suitable pucks of course to prevent damage to the rocker panels or floorpan. They suggest a 64mm (2.5") puck as a lifting pad.

Oddly, the same size as hockey puck ...

Never happened with the C3s or C4s either. Just an old myth. I had two big block C3s one a roadster the other a coupe. The roadster would flex like mad but I still could jack both of them from one point and take 3 wheels off the ground. I had the C4 for 10 years and jacked it from one point on either side. Same with both C5s. No problem with the plastic on any of them. Fiberglass is one tough material and it takes more than that to crack it. On the C5 jacking from one side can dent the frame in where you place the jack. If you use the GM or some aftermarket metal pucks the diameter is a little small to lift half the cars body weight. Real hockey pucks may have just enough surface area to work a little better.
