Ignition Switch Problems
Can somebody out there please help. My '98 has a loose and worn ignition; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. I went to Chevrolet and spent $44 for 10 minutes of their time to explain to me it would cost $650 to replace my ignition switch and recode my keys. I figured $200 would be expensive but $650? There must be alternatives.

Please post what symptoms that your are having! Also, read all of the DTC codes that are stored in the DIC and post them. There are LOTS of things that seem like ignition switch problems but can be something else!

Bill, Thank you for your response. The car will start normally in the morning, but when you stop, say for lunch, and come out to start your car, the key will not turn whatsoever. Take the key in and out and turn it over a couple of times, and eventually it turns. My chip is tight and clean, but ignition seems worn. The other symptom is when you go to start you get nothing. You can go a couple of days without a problem, but when you least expect it, it won't start. Sometimes if I push on the key it engages the starter motor. I wouldn't mind replacing the ignition switch myself. I also wouldn't mind having a two-key system (one for door locks). Anything to save money. Thanks, Steve.
