I have a 2001 A4 and I have been hearing a thumping noise in the front suspension when I make sharp turns. I took it to the dealership and they repaired a steering gear but that wasn't the problem because the car is doing the same thing. Has anyone else had this problem? I find that it is sometimes better to tell those guys at the dealership what is wrong with the car. For some reason they don't seem to know how to fix vettes properly the first time. I usually end up taking the car back 2 or 3 times before it is finally fixed.

I have had the same ploblem. I have narrowed it down to the steering rack. All the inner and outer rod ends are good. The upper and lower ball joints are good. I took the boot off the rack and jerked on rack, there was play in the rack. I adjusted the preload nut as per the shop manual and it did nothing to stop the noise.
I have ordered new shock dampening ring that goes between the rack and the body of the rack. Look at the exploded view at GM parts wholesale. It is item 6 in the view. $16.00 for the part.
This is the only part I can figure out that is worn. The grease looks good in the rack But I may try some high pressure grease and see if that stops the noise?

I'm assuming you checking the plastic sway bar end links? I had some odd noises like you're describing when one of mine broke. It wasnt obvious it was broken (visually) until i got under there and grabbed hold of it and found out it was cracked in two.
