Default Oil Temp

What is considered normal temps for the oil? Just got back from a trip and at times saw temps in the 220's. Is that normal or was I getting on the high side?

Oil temps at 220 is perfectly normal.

I saw 300 on the track.

220 is FINE.

Oil temps of 220 are normal in the summer. Coolant temp can get to the upper 220s in low airflow before the high speed fans kick on. With coolant temp this high, oil temp will follow. Even on the freeway when coolant temp may be down near 195 or so, oil temp will typically be 20 degrees above coolant temp, particularly if you are using a lower gear, say fourth or fifth instead of sixth.

At what point, for a street car, should you worry about oil temp?

There is no specific black and white temperature limit. Oil, even synthetic, breaks down with time at temp. The higher the temp, the lower the time and visa versa. If your oil temp is consistently below 250, you should be fine with relatively normal oil change intervals. I've read that around 300, the oil's life is measured in hours, which is probably one of the reasons race teams change their oil every race.

Personally, in my car which sees only track use, I change my oil every four track days.
