Default Stainless headers... Jet-Hot or Not?

Anyone out there with or without Jet-Hot coated S/S headers... if you didn't have your stainless steel headers coated, do you now wish you had? If you did have them coated, do you now wish you didn't?

In some ways I wish I had my KOOKS headers coated as I like the appearance of coated headers. Not that heat is a problem now, but coating would have certainly improved heat reduction, and maybe decreased valve train noise some.

Get them coated. Taking the heat away from the engine bay and the foot well in the cabin is more then worth the extra cost.

Running B&B shorties SS in my 97 coupe not coated- It did not increase the engine bay temps one bit...In fact, they went down a few degrees as the tubes allow the exhaust to go out of the engine better...the stock manifolds (in my case) are open fairly decent, but they have a large flat surface directly after the port as they make their way down. My B&B's have a nice smooth flow to them with no bottleneck what so ever. I thought they may need coating prior to putting them in...because I had a set of on non SS on a C4 before and I had them coated due to the metal type. The stainless in my case was extremely smooth and disapates heat better! Long tubes I guess get hot under the floor board...coating would probably keep that heat down...

I like mine just the way they came! plus the jethot on my C4 headers turned a nice shade of blue after they got hot several times...I got the high polished treatment on them...it didn't last that long.

I've coated two sets of headers, nether one were stainless. In both cases the coating only lasted two years before peeling off near the collector. Don't know if it would stick better on stainless or not. I had them recoated under warranty on one set but it started to peel again after a year. The second set I am not returning because, even with the warranty, you pay for shipping both ways and thats about $50.00 So, I'm not a big fan of Jet Hot.

Seems to be a mixed bag, even with the reduced engine bay temperatures. When I had steel headers I had them treated, but now with stainless waiting to go in I'm waffling... particularly after going to a car show and seeing all the nice stainless headers

I did not coat my LG's....There are no under hood heat issues and I love the bluish burnished color they become with time.

Even my stainless have turned a bluish color due to heat...but it's not as bad as the Jethot ones I had done. They still look Stainless just a little hint of heat blue. The jet hot ones I had really turned an ugly color after a while...was a shame really, with my clean under hood C4- those became the eyesore. Stainless is a great under heat, it is no where near the regular steal ones when it comes to underhood heat...as I said above- my car runs cooler with the SS shorties then it did with the stock manifolds...sounds better also! I say save your $$ for more mods...jetcoating was $275 plush two times shipping...that was a bit much for what I ended up with...

Cheers!

I didn't coat my LG's either but the wife complains about the heat in the cabin now. I even have the tunnel reinforcement plate from Elite Engineering.

I am going to install the precut insulation kit to help with the heat next week.

I don't really feel the heat except next to the shifter.

Thanks,
Mike

Keep in mind if you JH coat that it can cause the welds to crack and cause the O2s to report a leaner AFR being the exhaust is kept hotter.
For SS I do not think coating is needed.

IMO coating is a waste of money - My Stainless Works LTHs aren't coated and I have no problems with heat in the engine compartment.

I emailed Kooks about 2 months ago and asked if they offered their C5 headers with ceramic coating. Their reply stated they Do Not recommend ceramic coating of their Stainless C5 headers. They Do offer ceramic coatings on their other steel headers.

My LG longtubes were coated. My Kooks are not.

FWIW.

I hadn't heard about Jet-Hot, or any other ceramic coating, causing weakened welds. Interesting.
Where did you hear or read about this??

I had my Dyna's coated inside & out and my cabin temps are cooler than w/ the stock setup, they look great, quieter *tick* than others i've heard, I can drive all day and wait less than 5 min and grab & hold tubes, cost me $180. My bud didn't do his but after experiencing mine he now states if his headers have to come off for any reason, he's going to have his done.

Don't confuse Jet Hot with ceramic. Totally different stuff. Jet Hot won't crack off normally, like ceramics will. My Doug Thorley's on my motorhome have been coated for 10 years. Still look like the day I got them. Ceramics crack and corrode underneath. Leave ceramics to coffee cups!

I think there is a LOT of MISINFORMATION going on here. I have used Jet Hot coatings on SS and non-SS headers several times now. If you get the Ceramic Coating, not just the high temp coating, it will last and not peel. I have several years of experience with my past WS6, the rest got sold before 2 years. No discoloration, no peeling and a definate decrease in under hood temps. Compared to any other F-body with headers(SS or non, but all uncoated), the Jet Hot coating produced much cooler temps.

Saying your engine bay got cooler by removing the stock exhaust manifold and going to a straight SS header is a no brainer...Of course it got cooler. Go from SS to a coated SS and you will see a bigger difference.
