Default keyless entry problem

1999 corvette, just bought recently, and the keyless enrty dosnt work, both moduals on the keys seem to be dead. I tried changing the batteries and nothing. There is a little on/off switch on the actual modual, what is this for? Is there a way to program it ? or is this a dealer situation? I hope not

any help GREATLY appreciated

thanks

yes, there is a reprogram sequence that you can go through. To be safe I would go through these steps (PS - I know some will recommend holding lock/unlock for a few seconds, I say do the full method to be safe):

1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position.
2. Clear any warning messages on the Driver Information Center (DIC) by pressing the RESET button.
3. Press the OPTIONS button on the DIC several times until the blank page is displayed, then press and hold
the RESET button for two seconds.
4. When the message FOB TRAINING is displayed, push the RESET button once. The message HOLD LK+UNLK 1ST
FOB will be displayed.
5. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 15 seconds.
6. When a transmitter is learned, the DIC will display FOB LEARNED and then prompt you to learn the next transmitter.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the 2nd FOB.
8. Remove the key from the ignition.
The programing mode will shut off if:
You don't program any transmitters for two minutes
You take the key out of the ignition.
You have programed three transmitters.

The On/Off is for the passive lock/unlock. Not sure of the time interval but when it's on the car will unlock when you approach and lock when you walk away. However if you're in close proximity at the end of the next interval it will lock or unlock, whatever the opposite is of it's last action.

Also, here's a real shortcut for programming the remotes. Just stand next to the car and hold lock and unlock together on the remote for 10-15 seconds. The horn will beep and you're done!!

Be careful about leaving your keys in the car with the passive lock turned on. I did this at home (left keys on seat) and the goofy thing locked me out of the car. Opened it with the spare set but on the road it would have been a different issue. I heard you could also rock the car to get it to unlock, but didn't try that.

This will work, however, if you want the car to learn which remote is being used (in order to enable the auto adjustment features on the seat, steering, radio presets, interior temperature presets, etc., for different drivers) you MUST use the DIC method. This way (the DIC method) up to three remotes can be identified individually, and the car presets for each initiated, by the car.

Pressing both keys and waiting for the horn just synchronizes the fobs. If it works, you are done. You need to do this after replacing the batteries. If it doesn't work, try the dic method.

I have a '99 and had the same problem with my key fobs. I tried the above and presto, they worked again. This forum is really GREAT!!!

Sam, the DIC method need only be used if you want the car to recognize different fobs for different drivers (i.e. the wife has different presets for seats, radio, A/C, etc thajn you do). The car can recognize three different individual fobs for different presets. Then when you unlock with each fob, all these presets will be activated for each driver. Using the press and hold method will also train the fobs, and is much quicker and easier, but will not teach the car which fob is which. Personnaly, I use the press and hold because I'm the only driver and do not have different seat, radio, etc, presets, for different drivers.

Hi Ed, As unbelievable as it may seem-for some strange reason BOTH of my fobs quit working at the same time. I tried to just hold lock/unlock for the prescribed 7 minutes, etc.,-still didn't work! When I used the above dic method, they worked again! Go figure???

hey guys, well i just talked to my dad and i guess when he held down the 2 buttons for 15 seconds and the horn beeped, it worked, but only for a few minutes, then it stopped working after that, so it seemed like a quick fix only, im going to try the 8 steps, and hope that permanently corrects the problem, if not any OTHER ideas?

I have heard that others have replaced the FOBs when they no longer stay programmed.

I thought the passive lock / unlock fobs were only for 97 and 98. You said yours is a 99.
Anyone else?

I've got a 99 with the passive switch also - mine is doing the same thing. I went thru both programing methods and it only works for about a minute after. Then nothing. I guess I get to spend more money on a non-go-fast mod!?

You might check out this thread.

Open up and check the right front ground. Clean it up and reprogram your fobs and your problems may go away. This may also fix gas gauge problems and tire pressure indication problems.
