Default Re-Program Fan temp.. how much?

I have a buddy.. had new lower temp thermastat put in, and needed to re-program fan temp to turn on... at first they told him he needed a controller... then told him they could re-program...it is a 98... they charged $500... is that a lot.. seems high... what does a LS1 Edit cost? Thoughts?

Holy Sheet...if that $500 was only to reprogram the fans he was hosed royally!!!! A full wideband dyno tune is around $500. Heck, even one or two of the handheld tuners like HPM can reprogram the fans and he probably could have borrowed one from another forum member just for that.

A fan controller is not that expensive and fairly easy to install. It's around $100+

You can also go the hi-tech way and buy a Hypertech PPIII or a Predator. Even those will not set you back $500. This is what I had done and I can adjust them whenever I want.

I bought the Vinci switch and it works great. A lot less than $500 too. I also have since had a dyno tune including 18 pulls (baseline and tuning) and it was still less than $500.

I have taken so much flack for buying a used hypertech,$200 shipped, that was 2 years ago, yet for that price I was able to lower my fan settings, have four line pressure settings for my A-4, can adjust shift points , have three performance programs to choose from, can raise my rev limiter, and I dont have to be a PCM guru to do all this.

Well thanks to your posts... my friend asked the guy if that was the right amount.. it is at a SO. CAL Vette place... they said they would review the bill and let him know tomorrow... but also said..."we can un-do the re-program"... it just seems high to me to set just fan temp... no tune..

You could buy HPTuners for that car for that money and do many other things as well!

You can have somebody do an LS1 edit for less than $500 and do alot more for you at the same time. You can also buy a predator used form somebody here on the Forum and save a few bucks..

Which ever route you decide to take, don't ever do business with that cam artist!

Ok, Here is the scoup... My Buddy with a Corvette is Mike.... ... so.. ah... Corvette Mike... ya.... Anaheim... well after bitching.. as the total estimate was $500... R&R exhaust (installed TI) install rear CD changer... Theremostat.. and re program fans.... Well he added paint rear rotor hubs..$148 (yes really) and the CD changer need to be fixed, they sent it out for $200... and 1 gal. of dexcool..$16.95... 1st bill was $over $1500.... when it was asked how it got that high.. from $500 plus the adds... they put $500 in the bill to program the fans... which was included in the first $500 estimate.. Now.. pissed off..they revised the bill to $1167.15, plus tax of $16.81.... as they charged $200 for a "Program LS1 97-98" and $74 labor to "Program PCM".. what is that about.. this is a bone stock 98 coupe... no tune...then at the bottom they took $100 off labeld "Misc"... Ok he paid it.. scratching his head... but... it just did not set well with me.

Default I just wanted too add my 2 sense worth...

Since my name is Mike and I made a trip to anaheim... Yep it was me I was the victim...

Its pretty sad when you ask the tech people that are the so called experts in advance....

I have a stock 98 I bought the 12 cd player and would like to have it installed I have instructions...

Tech Guy oh great we have had allot of inquiries about doing it I would love to have the chance to install it in yours and we can have an idea how to do it in the future... R & D....

Second I would like the have the 160 thermosat fix as per what I had read on the forum....

Reply from the tech... Oh I think since you car is a 1998 you have to use the controller we can't reprogram your system like the do in the 2000 model....

My reply okay I guess is thats the only way you can do it then thats what you need to do.....

Keep in mind this was 4-27-05.......

Oh by the way the front cowl on the passenger side is torn can you fix that too? Oh no problem shouldn't be more than 35 dollar for the part....

Total estimate at that time was $500.00 (Okay I can live with this...)

Month later hows the car comming... We are having problems figuring out the wiring? Hmmm Okay I have a friend with a 1998 with the 12 cd changer option installed would it help if he came by... Sure that would be great we only need to look at it for 15 minutes.....

Oh I had to call a radio guy we use he says you cd player is broken... Ok whats my options... Well he can fix it for 150- 175... Okay great go ahead.....

Come and pick up the car we will call you when the cd player is fixed everything else is done....

I pick up the car.... drive for a day or 2.... Hey I notice the temp is still kind of high--- did you do the thermostat and the reprogram yet?? Oh we just put the thermostat in we didn't do the proramming yet.... Oh thats funny you said you where all done and all you had to do was put the cd player in..... We where busy and didn't have a chance to get to that yet....

Oh note to forum the z06 Exhaust system I had installed almost fell off the passenger side the next day after I had the car back when I went back to pick it up the first time..... Seems the tech was absent in Mech school the day the discussed tightening the bolts back on after they where done... Need to say 20 dollars later at my favorite muffler shop... It was fixed.... Normally I do whatever I can myself but I am in between homes right now.. I moved everything is in storage.... I would of fixed it myself...

I also put new rotors in the rear on... After I took the car back... Hey just out of curosity why am I seeing allot of rust on my stainless steel rotors? You need to paint them.... Hey since you have the car there do you do it... Yep not a problem I'll have it taken care of... Great... rust on new rotors look like crud.....

So I called a week ago... Tech how is the car coming... Well the radio guy said its fixed but it won't work in your car... I think we need to add one more wire... But the tech guy isn't returning our calls he took your radio out of your car and also has the 12 cd player.... We should get it done by the weekend....

Yesterday I get a call.... Mike your cars done.... Oh great uhmmm how much is the total.... Oh 1500 dollars..... Shock gasp.... How did it go from 500 to 1500? I Figured about 900 total....

Attitude that car has been a headache since the first day its been dropped off.....

Hmmm I didn't say I wasn't going to pay it I just want the reason it went up so high?

Attitude and more attitude... We told you it was going to be 500 dollars just to program it......\

My reply... Funny you never mentioned that too me and it says it clearly on the estimate total $500 dollars.....

Well we wasted all this time on the cd installation... My reponse... You knew it was going to be a learning project.... You wanted to do it... You quoted me 250 dollars.... What changed....

I said I think some of the things you did cost more than they should of ..

Tech... Attitude... Well I can unprogam the setting if you want and you don't have to pay me then....

Hmmm no I think $1000.00 dollars is fair... Are you insane you know how much money I (?) I(?) am loosing and what I'm not charging you already.....

At this point reasoning with the man is way out of the possible realm...

Smart *** comment... Fine pay me what you think its worth and get your car out of here...

My reply... I am trying to justify your in my mind why you are charging 500 dollars for a program charge you never mentioned and you had written in the quote.... I don't think this is fair and I am not out to pay for work that you did for free.... But I think you need to rethink your work and look at it.... I think 900 dollars is in the ball park but I said a thousand is fair if there where charges not included in the quote I didn't verbally okay.....

Tech's reply.... I'll look it over and call you back.... slams down the phone.......

I wait all day never got a phone call back....

I leave a voice mail..... I would like to pick up my car the people up front don't have the paperwork...... Please call me back with a total so I can come pick the car up.....

At this point I can imagine what is going on in the tech's mind...

Call next morning... Your car is done its 1183... If you don't agree we can discuss it when you come and get your car... Click....

Okay..... Now at no time did I ever raise my voice say anything nasty or handle myself unprofessionally.....

Am I the bad guy??????

I can safetly say I will never ever go back to that paticular place and deal with the service department again... Everyone else was super nice....

But for this I would drop my stuff off in Oxnard .......

Just thought I would share my so called unpleasant experience with the forum....
