Headlight Covers out of Sync.

I relplaced the gear in my left headlight 7 months ago and alls well until last night. When I shut the car off the right cover retracted but the left stayed open. Today, when I turn the headlights on, the left light closes the right one opens. When I turn it off, the opposite occurs. No grinding sounds, etc.
Any ideas on how to fix?

Also, it's time for brakes. Is this something that is best done by a dealer or can a good independent show do the job just as well?

did you try turning them off and lowering the one manually?

see what happens if you adjust one to manually match the other either up or down.

When I close the malfunctioning one manually and then turn the light on, it does not open. When I turn the lights off it opens and the other one closes.

You know, it sounds like the wiring harness to the HL motor controller is on upside down / backwards.

I agree, but why did it work fine for 7 months?
