Usually caused by bad vacuum to air diverter doors. Had it happen to me twice as a result of leaking battery damaging vacuum lines. See

Did you see if there were any codes?

Also, did you recently pull the battery power? (sounds like a stupid question, but trust me on this)

you dont need a scan tool to check codes. Clear any display on dic. Hold the #4 button and ht the #1 button 4 times. Then you can use 1-4 to scroll through codes or let it auto display them.

What exaclty is going on? Air wont switch to any other vents then defrost? Does the HVAC display say it changed? if so, its probaly a vacuum line issue. Let me know, you probably dont have to remove dash. YOU can apply vacuum to the hose under the dash by the blower motor and see if the door is in fact operating. if so, its the vacuum to the door that is at fault.
