Well, if you want to give up some performance on your LS1...I can fix the knock for you...it is called adding weight to the engine. GM did replace the 6.0 in our pickup at around 30K...I asked why the replacement was being done...it was due to adding heavier pistons...and of course to handle the heavier pistons...the crank and rods were replaced! So GM just puts in a complete engine...Now I don't know how much heavier all this contraption was...but can you imagine wanting that done to your Vette? It doesn't matter much on an HD truck...it still pulls just as much as ever...but racecar...it aint!!
PM me your VIN# and I'll see if I can pull it up in my GM Database.

me too please, I bought a 2001 Z06 two days ago and the original owner told me last night that in 2003 the GM shop did 2500.00 electrical work to the car but doesnt know what they did. What described was the classic steering wheel lock...
Before I bought my car, I called the GM dealership in NY where the car was purchased from. They told me the car had nothing on file just normal maintance. I bought the car. It ran nice, but a year later I noticed it was burning oil. I only put 3000 miles a year on the car. I got GM to extend the warranty for free because I complaint about piston slap. A year later I had the car re-ring by a dealership in NJ because it was burning oil. While the new rings were being installed, the NJ dealership told me one of the heads had been replace at the NY dealership.
Anyway, the car runs great now. althought I may be burning a little oil again after the cam change. Its not enough to really concern me. Maybe the new AFR heads will fix that. lolol

I just asked the dealer to run the history on my "new to me" 2001 Z06. It came back that there are no open recalls, but it also provided me with a history of all the warranty work that has been completed prior to me taking ownership. Come to find out, the car had an engine replaced at 4532 miles, then again at 6102 miles (less than 2 months later) . That is all the information it gave me. Now I am wondering why the engine(s) were replaced. could it have been for the oil consumption issue? The car runs great, and seems to be in excellent condition, but I like to know the history of the cars i am driving. Is there any way to access the dealer database to find out why the work was performed?
Look at the brighter side: you bought an '01 car and got an even newer motor!!! 8-)
Your local dealership can also pull the history of your car and give it to you on paper. Its free and informative. I was suprised on how much was done to my 99. Wow its unreal. Car looks and runs fine now. You can go to www.pistonslap.com for info on the ticking. Very common problem on many GM motors as well as the LS1. It goes away after warm up. I was pissed at first but have learned to live with it...
