Anybody have an idea of average battery life on the gel batteries? I'm soon approaching five (5) years on mine (01'). It cranked kind of slow after setting almost two (2) months while out of town.
My original AC Delco AGM battery is over 4 years old now and still starts the engine like the day it was new. Yours could go 7 years, but if you've let it sit for almost two months, you should charge it for a while at 10-20 amps. Otherwise, take it for an hour long drive at freeway speeds.
If your battery was able to crank after 2 months sitting in a corvette I would say its still pretty strong.
Maybe.
I'm thinking that 5 years is pretty good performance value for a battery. If you have symtoms, buy a new one!. Or risk getting stranded at the MOST inconvenient time and place. Amortized at $20 bucks a year, it just makes sense to get a new one.
It is not unheard of for the original AGM (Absorbant Glass Mat) batteries that were installed in the Miata's to last 10 years. More than a few on the Miata Forum have reported theirs lasting as long.

GUSTO
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depends on your point of view, Miatas don't have all of the sophisticated onboard electronics that continuously drain power that the Corvette does.
My Y2K OEM battery still works after 5 years and 4 months. I didnt start if for 16 days, and it worked fine. In the winter, I cant go 3 weeks without a start. That has been consistant for 3 years Ive owned the car. I was at Costco last week and was tempted to buy a red top for $99.99, but I figured the car still starts right up, so I bought the kids a playstation 2 instead.
