I have had the rear end of my 2000 vert resaeled 3 times. The last time was the end of June. On my way to Vegas for July 4th The speedo quit. I pulled over and the rear was smoking very bad. I went to this little town and had a lube shop check the rear diff and trans for fluid. The rear diff was empty. There was no sign of leaking. They filled it up and put the friction modifier in. The rear now has a slight howl at 60 mph when you give it just a little gas. The dealer said this is normal for the Corvette. It never did it before. I am a service manager for a Ford Dealer so I know cars pretty well. I just want to know from all of you. Does any of your cars have a howl in the rear end? Talking with the dealership is like

I just had my rear end rebuilt due to a Whine or howl under light acceleration. Rodney (crashed 94) said that my fluid being low was likely the cause of the failure. However, I had no sign of leaks. I thought that was strange, but he replaces the ring & pinion and it's fine now.

Sounds like each time they fixed the leak.....they never checked the fluid. If it didn't make any noise before, why should it be normal now? The dealer knows he is in for a major repair, and doesn't want to take responsibility for it. As a service manager you know that the service dept. is not going to want to eat this one.
By the way.....did your speedometer ever start working again?
That's not normal. Sounds like the dealer forgot to fill or underfilled it on the last fix and it overheated. They need to rebuild your diff with new gears - it will never get any better.
I know this is not normal. I am in the business. I just wanted all of your replies so I can show them that other vette owners would not agree with their conclusion. My techs have screwed up before, buy at my dealership we do take responsibilty and make it right. Thanks for your input.
$1,000 to rebuild it with 4.10 gears, replace bearings, seals. Also the gears were micropolished. They looked sweet before he put them in, almost looked chrome. Very happy with the quality of his work.
The Vette gears should not howl. Corvette is not an old Jeep, where such behavior is considered normal.
If it just started to howl, there is a small chance that the gears are not burnt up yet. May be you just fried the bearings by running without oil. Damaged bearing will cause gears out of the proper contact, hence the howl. You have to take the diff apart to replace the bearings anyway, any damage to the gears should be easy to spot for a trained eye. Good luck.
