I have the CLB installed, and every once in a while I get pull key for 10 seconds. I think thats normal, but my question is, it has been really hot here lately, and I am getting the error ALOT more since its been hot. Is that normal??? I wont get it right away either, I get it after car starts, and I think everything is normal. Then I start going, and ****, there is the error. I HATE IT WITH A PASSION(venting over)
I really do not think it has anything to do with the column lock. It has everything to do with the resistor pellet that is impedded in your ignition key. Do you have a spare key? Try that one. If that doesnt fix it, it is most likely the ignition switch.

This message doesn't necessarily indicate a problem with the column lock. As Bill mentioned, it could be the resistor pellet on you key. Your Owner's Manual should also speak to other things that can cause this message and you may want to review what it has to say too. Good luck.

It could also be because your car is a 98. I went through two CLB's and each one gave me the "Pull key..." message every time I started the car. It would always start on the second attempt but the next time I started it up I had to repeat the drill again. I have an A4 so when the recall notice came I took care of it. The word I got from someone here on the forum was some 97/98 cars have a communication error between the CLB and the BCM. Mine was one of those. If your car is an A4, I recommend you have the recall done. If it's an MN6 I don't know what the solution is.
I get it all the time, just yank down (HARD) and clockwise on the wheel as you turn the key. It should pop the locking pin loose. Also, inserting the key in the ignition with the door open seems to trigger the column lock more often.

My 98 A4 had to have the recall harness removed and the computer reprogramed. The pin is removed from the column or whatever they do but they took all the rest off. I complained to GM over the Internet about the 10 second thing and they said that the 97 and 98's had a problem with the relay they installed and if you complain to customer service they at least fix it temperarily until they work something else out?

Good Luck
His column is not locking, he is only getting the message...BTW, why haven't you installed the CLB?

I don't have an owners manual...never came with the car.
