Default What thermostat should I use?

All,
I had my car dyno tuned and the fans come on much lower now (around 190 degrees). I was debating adding a lower temp thermostat to compliment the change. What does everyone think?

I do live in the northeast and the car is driven in the cold weather.

What temperature stat should I get?
160 degree
170 degree
180 degree

When I lived in Chicago, I ran the 178* T-stat. Some others run the 172*. It all depends on how much winter driving you do. 178* with a bottle of water wetter should be fine!

Reprogrammed fans and a 180 degree 'stat and the temp never goes over 196.

Use a 170 - It should warm up and cruise in the lower to mid 180's until it has a reason to rise such as traffic or flogging your engine. Your fan settings should keep the hot stuff away unless you need to clean your radiator and/or condenser.

stock all the way.
if you have a cooling problem, get a bigger radiator.

I don't have a cooling problem per se. It is staying below the 200 degree mark most, if not all, of the time. I am a little concerned about the fan life. I think the fans are running most of the time that the engine is running since the on temp is around the thermostat temp.

I run a 160 but I do almost zero winter driving.
I would use the 178 in your case. you do want to heat up that oil
to get the water out.

I have a 160 but for you with those cold winter, I would run a 180. If it still runs too hot, you will need a larger aftermarket radiator. The radiator was way too small in stock C5s, especially for hot climates.

178 here with reprogrammed fans. Runs at 183 winter & summer unless in summer traffic, still never goes over 195.

The radiator is big enough for street driving, any climate. It's only too small for track racing.

I run a 160 tstat, and drive year round, temps in the 20's to 100's, and my coolant temp is in the 170's and 180's winter, and 180's to 195 top, in the summer. The oil temp gets high enough to get rid of any condensation if you do a little "spirited driving", it doesn't need to stay over 212 all the time for that.

Consider: I'm running a heads/cam package putting down over 400 rwhp, which makes more heat than stock. Here, in the desert, I drive regularly in ambient temps of 100++. Even in stop and go city traffic, with the A/C on, I never see coolant temps above 195. Now that is with a 160 tstat, water wetter and re set fans.

If the radiator was too small the temps would climb beyond this point. It's not too small.

If you are having high coolant temps look for the problem somewhere else; fans not operating, gunked up radiator, debris in the radiator fins.
