You know the ticking sound you hear when a valve needs adjusted? This is the best way I can describe this sound, but it is n't quite as loud or does it come from the heads. It is very prominent from under the front of the motor and can hear it coming from under the car when hood is down as well as driving from cockpit. It gets faster and louder with increased RPMs,It is a 2000 Coupe,A4, with no Mods, YET! Buying and installing all at once. Anyone got an Idea? Thanks
Try the new Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil. I had a noise like that and the new Mobil 1 oil stopped it but the old mobil 1 wouldn't. Amsoil will also stop the noise but Mobil 1 is easier to find and cheaper. Try that first before you start doing something costly.
I went from Mobile 1 to Red Line ,but the tick was there before I switched. I cant quite figure it out. I just hope it isn't my bearings!

You have piston slap, a very common problem with lots of GM engines. Its during the warm up period and goes away after that, most of the time.. Read more at www.pistonslap.com
WOW! I never knew that this was such a big deal. A Lot of Good info ther David426. Thanks for the insight. It's a bummer though, just ordered the AFR's from Jason at Texas-Speed and wonder if it is pointless to install until I get this repaired? Anyone with some experience out there?

Thanks Dave68! I'll give it a try. Do you have the same problem? And if so what have you done about it? Does it really hurt performance or just an annoyance?

It is really just an annoyance, but was most noticable when I parked between two cars. Although this K&N oil filter (and the Baldwin version as well) quiets the ticking noticably, it doesn't completely eliminate it. Using heavier oil will make it worse, so stick with 5W-30, 0W-30, or 0W-40 synthetic oils for best results.
Had the car up on a lift and the ticking sound is coming from the crank pulley or the casing right behind it. But definitly from that region.
MAke sure it isn't something simple like a deteriorated plug wire causing a spark jump to ground. Try looking at the engine running in the dark and see if anything looks abnormal.
I think my Corvette also has some form of piston slap. It sounds like a "quiet" diesel engine when starting it from an overnight park, but is less after an 8 hour park at work. After warm-up, all is very quiet.
It's a little annoying, only because I expected perfection paying that much money for a car. I figure if it ever got worse, it would be a good excuse to have Lingenfelter to their magic.
