I had a Honker put in last summer before my long tubes. My before dyno runs, with the Honker and Corsa Sports, otherwise stock, were 320 rwhp and 330 rwtq. After the long tubes and a modest tune from Slowhawk, the dyno showed 342 rwhp and 355 rwtq.

So, my sotp is that the Honker worked very well, and actually made the long tubes even better.

The Honker is the only after market system that has a CARB-EO# and the only one so far legal in Kalifornia. VR is working on a EO# and unless you know someone even a Blackwing won't pass the visual here in the peoples republic! The one thing we do have on the left coast is pretty good weather

Since I have the Honker on my car, for those who have not seen one in person, the quality and fit is excellent and the accordion section is much smoother inside than the outside ribs would lead you to believe.

I would go with the Vararam mainly because of the price difference.

Your just paying for the name "Callaway" with a $500.00 price tag.

We picked up 26 HP from the Honker and a Calloway throttle body installed on a Z06. We have both in stock ready to ship.

This has been why I have stuck with a Z06 airbox on my coupe - too much trouble changing hardware out to pass the visual. I'm sure other intakes could pass, if they cared to try - it seems it would make good business sense, since there are plenty of C5s and C6s in CA, used year-round.

So, I'm thinking if Callaway will make the investment in us, I'll make the investment in them.

Any other input on the TB?

AND is it 26 RWHP or estimated at the crank? Was the car tuned as well? If it IS RWHP, was it SAE or STD-corrected? 26 RWHP (SAE-corrected) is incredibly impressive if this is true.

Regarding CA emissions, an intake such as the Halltech Stinger or Blackwing is very easy to swap out before your smog test is due. As a matter of fact, the filter needs to be inspected/cleaned/oiled every couple of years anyway, so it's really not THAT big of a deal.

You could do two zip ties. At about $.01 per zip tie, that is about

1500 HP per dollar

On my Z06 it went from 356-359 stock to 372 with the Zip tie mod. Same as a VR equipped car which was tested at the same time.

http://www.z06vette.com/forums/showt...threadid=28696

BTW, CJS had another method I had forgotten about. You can use everything with the stock box. You need a Piece of 2" PVC pipe to lay across the face of the box.
Another method is what I did, use a 2 foot length of 2" PVC pipe layed down across the paper filter. Then you can use the 2 stock band clamps to hold it down.
Take all of 1 minute to do.
Here is mine...

Loosen clamp at inlet of throttle body.
Disconnect air tube on drivers side of airbox.
Pop off airbox cover at the grommets in the very front.
Remove entire Airbox, Filter, MAF, neck assy as a unit.
Set assy on table.
Undo 2 bands/clips that release airfilter. Rotate these 90 deg and they will pop off.
Lift off top cover and set aside.
Daisy chain 3-4 Zip Ties (regular length, or 2 long ones) to make one long one that will reach around entire lower airbox, filter, and filter cage. Make two.
Tighten zips as tight as you can get them. (McRAt method)

My method is slighly differnet
I simply removed the factory metal straps and replaced them with shorter one made from wire ties. I use the two stock plastic clamps, and I run a zip tie from the handle to the opening the metal straps came out of. You make the straps just a little short so you can put the clamp under a load. This allows for consistent pressure to the filter frame.

Reinstall, don't forget to tighten hose clamp at throttle body.

Seriously, it took me less than 15 mins, and required just a flat blade screwdriver.

First off you can do a basically free mod. The zip tie mod. On my 2002 it was worth 15RWHP and 11 lb/ft of Tq.

Stock Box assembly

Other than a slightly bigger opening, the box portion is the same. So, you don't need to buy a new Z06 intake. Any C5 intake will work just fine.

I used the factory clamps. I simply removed the factory metal straps and replaced them with shorter one made from wire ties. This allows for consistent pressure to the filter frame.

Here Mc Rat's car. They just wrapped the ties around the box. I re-used the factory hardware to allow you to change the filter.

Hope this helps...

Default Good Post J-Rod

You know J-Rod I am a Vararam guy, but you are right, bang for the buck the Z-tie beats them all. That was the best informative post I have seen yet on one of these dreaded CAI threads.

Anyone done an oil analysis on a motor with the Honker installed? I would really like to see those results, especially silicon/silicate versus the stock filter and airbox cover.

I have mine still in the box. I'll take a pic before I install it this weekend.

And:

I just made a dyno run last week; I plan on going to the same dyno after I'm done. - I know, different weather will make the results less comparable, but it's the best I can do.

By the way: I have a complete aftermarket exhaust, but no other mods.
