Default auto trans refill question

I drained my trans fluid, changed the filter.I would say more than 3qts came out,the manual says 5 has to go back in. I put 2qts in it started to dribble out(car running in park)I went for a slow ride, went through the gears, jacked it back up level, added a 1qt and a half started to dribble out(car running in park). All together it took 3 1/2 qts.Could that be right?I'm I missing something some where?Want to go to E-town Saturday. 97cpe.3.42gears,2600 stall

Mine only took 3.5 as well. No problems here, you should be fine.

I have read that when you drain, not all the fluid leaves the transmission. That's why it took less than the manual's stated capacity. The only way that you get it all changed is a power flush.

The manual says it should take 11 quarts to fill on a fresh rebuild and I've done it twice and never been able to get more than 9 in a fresh tranny.
