I'm about to go change the oil ing the trans, and diff. to amsoil 75-W90 and I wanted to know if anyone else was using this, and if it proved to be as good as they say it is? Do you have to use any additive in the rear end or just the oil itself? This will be my first time changing the transmission and rear end oil so any tips or special tool use knowhow will be appreciated. Thanks
I have Amsoil in the trans and in the rear. I haven't noticed any difference. You shouldn't have to add the friction modifier to the rear as the severe gear formula already has it. If you find that your rear chatters while making sharp turns you may have to add a little, but I didn't. It's a good idea to get a hand pump (amsoil sells these also) to get the fluid up into the trans and rear.
Thanks for the tips!!! I changed the rear with 75w-90 severe duty(2 quarts...I drained about 1 and 3/4 quarts, hope this is alright)??? I started to change the transmission(MN6 six speed) and as I crawled under the car and looked for the drain plug, It had a metal tag on the trans that said "Use Dexron III ATF fluid only", what gives? Do all six speeds have this tag? I'm waiting to change it so I'll be sure I'm putting in the right fluids, anyone know about this??
This is just a couple of steps I'm taking for getting everything together for my "baby", since this will be the first time I've gotten her out in 1 1/2 years!!!!
I switched to Amsoil and added over half the friction modifier and 2 weeks later my differential started to slip. I drained it immediately and replaced it with Mobil 1 with no modifier and it drives much better now. I really can't attest to Amsoil but just becareful adding the friction modifier. Mobil 1 has some additive already in it so you may not need any extra.

Hey bro, unclear if you wanted to put in 75w100 in the tranny-Do Not.Use automatic tranny fluid only-Choose your brand but these late model trannies use auto trans fluid, wasn't sure if you knew that or not.JER
GM specification for the C5/Z06 manual six speed is a fluid meeting GM specification DEXRON III, which is an ATF fluid. AMSOIL ATF meets this standard as does Redline D4 ATF. Not sure about others. I use AMSOIL ATF in my tranny on the track.
Tranny takes just under 4 quarts
- Fill plug about half way forward on driver's side about 2/3 the way to the top
- Drain plug in the lower rear passenger side
Diff takes just under 2 quarts
- Fill plug on the back, upper right
- Drain plug bottom dead center
A hand pump comes in very handy for both (I use a separate one for each fluid then put them in a labeled ziplock bag).
I use AMSOIL ATF in my Manual six speed Z06 tranny which now has over three years total and two race seasons on it. This fluid meets GM Dexron III specifications for either the A4 or the M6.
AMSOIL just came out with a new extreme duty differential gear lube:
AMSOIL Severe Gear Extreme Pressure Synthetic 75w90
I had been running the Series 2000 75w90, but will switch to this new gear lube.
Manual tranny takes about 3.75 quarts. Diff takes about 1.75 quarts.
A4 tranny takes about 11 quarts for a flush and about 5 quarts if you just drain and refill according to the AMSOIL Online Product Application Guide.
AMSOIL also sells a very nice high flow hand bottle pump.

Most automatic transmission experts (ATRA) do not recommend the use of synthetic transmission fluids. The recommendation is to stick with the Dextron fluid to avoid clutch problems. The transmission clutches were designed to run on Dextron and changing to other fluids, including synthetics, effect clutch performance. I don't think it matters with the M6 but is still a waste of money. Stick with a good Dextron fluid and change it often.
