Default heads & cam....or cam only?

Hello everyone. I'm in a little bit of a bind. I've been toying with the notion lately of doing a head/cam package to the car and have hit a wall on wether or not the AFR'S are worth the extra dough as opposed the my stock 243's.

The car is not a daily driver and I was planning on an LG X3 cam along with some milled AFR's and possibly a LSX90/NW90 combo....My main concern after extensive research is do the AFR's flow their money's worth over the stock 243's?

Would it be more cost effective to cam only the car and have less of a dyno queen and more of street performer, or go with the whole shibang and make an insane amount of power that may be difficult to lay down without a set drag tires 24/7?

All comments are greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Alan

What type of trans, mn6 or a4? Naturally that makes a big difference. Mines not a daily driver either, but, I didn't want some shaking, stinking, puking, high winding car that was only good for something over 4000 rpms. Do you really want Drag Radials? Is that the type of driving you plan on doing? Are you going to drag race the car? I'm glad I did what I did. It's me, it my kind of package. I got Wonderful power, but, I could take it anywhere, and be comfortable in ANY driving situation. I already have. I don't want to drag race. You run a very, very, high risk if you street race. So, I got the perfect package for me. Search your soul, for what you really want, and then research. In fact, researching will help you decide WHAT you really want!

Do a basic Stage 2 port and polish on the 243s and do the cam along with blueprinted oil pump. Most cost effective. Run some good gears.

But, what do I know? I'm a cheap-skate, and I've got my own ideas about what I want.

I did a G5X-3 clone, stock heads, usual bolt ons (headers etc), A4, stock TC and TALL 2.73:1 gears.

Pulled 384rwhp 364rwtq witha very conservative tune. Car is docile and can cruise, drive in traffic and idle with the A/C on in gear.

You are starting with a better platform that I have (Z06) so you already have that advantage.

For me, $2000+ for heads is too much for what you gain. That's just MHO. I intend on getting Stage II ported stock heads but that's all. Gears and a stall are next month.

I never drag race - only road race and tight twisties so this suits my driving style very well.

As Loudsam said quite aptly, "search your soul" to see what you really want and research will bring the answers to you.

Especially with the "cheap-skate" part.

have your heads lightly ported, you'll need to upgrade the springs anyways with a decent cam so its not that big of a deal. if the car is tuned by a very good tuner, it'll still run fine at lower rpm's. i'm going with some stage II heads and the x3 or f13 cam and expect over 400rwhp and it to be fairly streetable. i dont mind it being a little rough though

My vert in my sig. seems like a good example of what you're looking for. Good luck on whatever way you decide to go.

I went with a complete LG motorsport package. I got the header system with no cats, g5x-3 cam kit with springs and push rods. Did the borla stinger exhaust and did my own tuning. Was able to go from 340rwhp stock to 408 with the above mods. I am still in the process of tuning it more, I got alot of timing out of it. Goin to add more timing and hopefully get 420's n/a out of it. Should be no problem to get there. Still got a intake to add and then it is time to hit it with a 200 shot. That cam should love the spray. I can let you know the outcome after this saturday. That is the final tune day..

I have no interest in drags those guys scare me (I allways check under the bed before the light goes out!) but I like to go fast for hours and hours, days and days sooooo, I went with my own concept,.... As you put in more parts, make sure a new clutch is on the list

If you do the cam only, be aware that heads will be in the back of your mind. A little work to your existing heads since they are Z06 heads could go a long way!

If you are doing the cam work and have the extra money then either get your Z06 heads milled or go with the AFRs. Since I have a coupe I figured to just replace the stock heads with the 205 AFRs, but I might have thought differently if I had the Z06 heads (ok probably not )

I have a Spec STG.3 with an alum. flywheel and a hardened output shaft so the tanny is on par with more power.....

I recently(since last night)have been toying with the idea of going with a slightly samller cam(228/230 114lsa) and a set of ported/milled LS6 heads from a forum member. My newest main concern is will the cam be big enough to satisfy my power goals? My goals are to have a powerful badass ZO6. :o

The previous owner states 450whp is obtainable with this setup, and I'm left to try and figure out if a 450whp pulls strong enough..

I do appreciate all the opinions and feel free to keep them coming..
