Default Tire Pressure Sensor question

Last night coming home from work (on highway) I got a "Check Tire Press Sys" (or something similar) message. My left rear tire does not show it's pressure since then (XXXpsi), therefore that is certainly the problem. Question is, what would cause that?

Note: 2 weeks ago, someone stole the valve caps off my wheels. Would this affect the reading?

thanks in advance

Denis

Sounds like a defective tire sensor (dead battery). No, the valve caps shouldn't have had anything to do with it.

This sensor is actually mounted in the wheel, so you'll need to have the tire dismounted to get that sensor replaced.

I agree with John, but before you do that, you might want to try to retrain the sensor one last time just for grins. It doesn't cost anything (assuming you have a reasonable sized magnet) and if it strarts working you've saved yourself the trouble of replacing it. Which in all likelyhood would solve the problem as well.

The procedures if you don't know them are here on the forum, just do a search...

If you do end up changing out the sensor, you don't need to fully dismount the tire. Just have the dismounter push the tire off the "valve stem side" of the rim. Loosen the nut on the sensor and have someone carefully push the tire away from the side of the rim for you while you reach in and remove the sensor and replace it with the new one. Carefully tighten the nut to spec and release the tire. Then just reinflate to reseat the tire. You shouldn't even have to rebalance the assembly... unless you just want to... Watch your hands while inside the tire, 'cause it's gonna hurt if the tire slips!!

Good luck... GUSTO

Tech Tip

Resetting Tire Pressure Monitors -- 1 of 1

I used this message forwarded from a fellow forum memeber and it worked just as described. Thought I would post for anyone else that may need to reset their TPMs. 1) Turn ignition on 2) Press "Reset" button in order to clear any IPC display warning messages 3) Press and release the "Options" button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank 4) Press and hold the DIC "Reset" button for 3 seconds 5) Press the "Options" button again until TIRE TRAINING message appears 6) Press "Reset" button until the IPC "Learn L Front Tire" message appears in order to begin the programming 7) Install the J41760 Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) System Programming Tool (large magnet will do) over the left front valve stem 8) The horn will sound, indicating the left front TPM sensor is programmed (if this takes more than 15 seconds, pull magnet back and try again, it will give you three tries. Then you must start over) 9) When the horn sounds, proceed to program the next TPM sensor in the following order as directed by the IPC messages: -Learn R Front Tire -Learn R Rear Tire -Learn L Rear Tire Programming can be canceled by turning ignition off, waiting 2 minutes with no sensors being learned, finishing all 4 wheels or through the DIC. If the programming is canceled with less than 4 sensors learned, it will only accept the codes programmed up to that point.

Since your Vette is a 98, the sensor batteries are probably approaching the end of their useful life. You will need a new sensor or you could replace the battery in the dead sensor. None of the sensors in my 99 have failed yet, but I keep an extra one, with a new battery installed, handy. Battery installation instrustions can be found at:

Sorry, I have to ask.. Did you put a tire guage to test if you really have any air in the tire? Runflats can loose air and you couldn't tell by looking at them. Again not trying to be a wise guy I just didn't read anything stating you verified the tire pressure. If you had a small leak in the valve stem you might have lost the air when your cap was removed.

Default worked!

It worked...

I was able to reset & delete the error message. Now I can read tire pressure again.

Thanks everyone!
