Default Abs/tcs Problem!!!!!!

I have a 1998 C5 A4. About 80k miles on her. About a month ago I installed Euro Tail lights and went through the proper installation. Looks great and no problems. About 2 weeks later I start getting the SERVICE ABS light followed by the SERVICE TRACION CONTROL SYSTEM light. I don't think that simply installing euro tailights could cause this??????????? Also, the car would stop just fine. Currently, these warning lights come on every time I drive the car. Also, I have noticed heavy pulsing during VERY light stopping! Very scary! Additionally, the rear right wheel made a pulsing (almost grinding but NOT) sound and the rear right wheel locked up for about 1 second and then released. Luckily I was only travelling at about 10mph and quickly got off of the road. I ran the codes and this is what I come up with: 28-TCS C1228H, 60IPC U1160H, AO-LDCM B2253H, B2285H, U1255H, U1064H, U1016H, U1096H AL-RDCM B2283H, B2285H, U1064H BO RFA U1096H, U1064H, C2100HC. If anyone knows how to diagnose and isolate this problem please let me know!!! thanks!!!!!!!!!

with that many codes coming up, I would first make sure that you don't have an electrical short going on

A lot of those codes are BS - door module communications and such..

Clear them all and take a short (and slow!) drive round the block to see what's currently happening.

My 98 has been in the shop for 11 days! He's hunting an electrical short in the TCS system. 1997s and early 1998's had a rear-mounted TCS behind the differential. This was prone to problems such as electrical shorts. It was moved up front in mid-1998s.

Good luck with the problems. Be careful!

OK, I cleared all the old codes and just got back from a test drive. The code it threw is 28 - TCS C1228H. Any advice?? Thanks!

Check the ground by the rear driverside. Mine was loose and gave me that code along with my cruise control disenaging when I used my turn signals every once in a while

C1228 RR Excessive Wheel Speed Variation

I would look for something going on with the wheel speed sensor or cable going to it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to check the sensors and grounds tonight and clean them up real good and see if that does the trick. I'm crossing my fingers that it is something simple like this and not $$$$$$$.

You have a rear mounted EBTCM. As stated previously the geronds for that module suffer from corrosion. Here are some pictures of the grounds. Before you get too deep in EBTCM Stuff (which translates into $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, CHECK AND CLEAN the grounds!

The EBTCM chassis ground is G-402. It is on the passengers side between the wheel well and the tire! Here is a picture of G-401 which is on the DRIVERS SIDE and is the ground for the fuel pump and fuel guage. G-402 is on the other side! Make sure it is removed, cleaned and reinstalled.

The ground screw on the EBTCM motor is easily damaged rendering the unit useless. Use a wrench on the nut closest to the motor and one on the outside one to prevent the connection from rotating inside the motor. Soak it in PB Blaster or WD-40 over night before you try to loosten it!!!!

Here are some more pictures of the EBTCM and connections:

The plug comes off the electronics module very easily. Al of your readings can be taken from there!

I have (by defalt, minus-$1600 bucks out of the wallet) become a resident expert on this thing!

You should be able to read 850-1350 ohms on each wheel sensor. You should also be able to spin each wheel and read .05 - 1 VAC on each sensor. If you take these readings at the EBTCM plug, you will elininate everything up to that point. Here are the pin# for each wheel.

LF = 15 & 31
RF = 14 & 30
LR = 12 7 28
RR - 13 7 29

I have tons of pictures of the guts to this thing. E - mail me if you want them bill327@msn.com

Here is what is inside the electronics module:
