I added a VNM "backbone" to my '04 Z about a year ago. Although ride and handling are definitely improved, I traced a creaking/popping sound that occurred in the mornings while backing out of the garage on uneven pavement to the backbone. I was able to confirm it by twisting the plate by hand the last time I had the car in the air for an oil change.
It basically only gets creaky before the exhaust heat expands the plate. I was just curious if anyone had experienced this joy. Thanks.
Sounds like the stiffer plate is not flexing where the old plate used to causing movement at the joint of the plate and frame. I haven't experienced that with my EE plate but I'll make a couple of suggestions. Easiest thing to start with would be to retorque the bolts to ensure nothing has loosened. Also, tighten the exhaust connections as well since that came out for the plate installation as well. If that doesn't help I'd try pulling the plate and apply some RTV or other high temp gasket material between the plate and frame and possibly even under each screw head.

Excellent ideas, Patches. Yup, I'm sure the stiffener plate is just doing it's job and not flexing where the old one used to give a little. I'm guessing there might be some dirt or crud between the plate and the frame too that might be causing a little grinding. I'll try a re-torque, and if that doesn't help I'll just live with it. The plate was well worth the investment!
