I went to Radio Shack and bought a bulb (Part #: 272-1154) and proceeded to pull apart the car and remove the HVAC control module. Everything came right out and the control module opened up with just the 4 screws on the back. I found that I was able to work without separating any of the wiring between the boards or removing the ***** from the faceplate. A little heat from the soldering iron and the stock bulb pulled right out of the board. Again the soldering iron was applied, this time from the front, and I was able to push the new bulb right through the board. A little flux and some heat and the bulb was soldered in. There was plenty of solder on the board still to not need any more. I cut the leads with a small pair of nippers and assembled everything and the bulb lit up. I will be ordering some more so that I can replace all the bulbs as I noticed a few more were out. It is a relatively easy thing to do, and I would say anyone with a little experience with a soldering iron should be able to do this and save themselves some money.
Chris congrats on your fix. I have a 99 and my HVAC display has gone out (won't illuminate). Over time it gradually disappeared, I just posted a question about this. I asked the GM parts guy and was told I needed to replace the unit itself (part cost approx. $400). If you don't mind would you give me any and all particulars (cost and which bulb from radio shack) for this fix.

Replacing the bulbs will not fix a 'display' that has gone out. I bought a new one from Fichtner's for about $100 off retail. Call Bob for a price. I had it shipped 'second day' from Montana.

It is plug 'n' play and takes about 45 minutes to replace. There are places that will repair them, but I didn't want three weeks downtime while it happened.
When my display went bad, I found a few bad solder joints on some of the resistors. After resoldering them, the display lights up like new and hasn't given me any trouble in a few years.

The bulbs and LEDs only light up the buttons and blue and red around the temperature *****. The display is it's own separate unit, and I do not believe it is backlit, but rather generates its own light.
Here is a picture I took of the board after the new bulb was soldered on. Sorry the picture is so blurry, but my camera does not like focusing that close. I will try holding a macro lens in front of it next time I have it apart. The new bulb is the one with the white base 2nd up from the bottom.

Thanks for the info, but I'm a little confused. My HVAC unit works fine, ie buttons, blower, temp settings etc but it has no display. Someone has given me a reply that says someone named 'digitalguy' can repair it.
That is correct. He has mine for repair as we speak. His phone number is: 507-429-4489. Costs about $50 and he says he will warranty his work for five years. Name is Dave Ruberg.
