Is it possible to add a cam only to a 2001 without doing the heads as well? And if so how much power can I excpect and how much will it cost? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
Of course it is. Many people cannot afford the H/C package so they opt for the CAM only package.
Many people see around the 400 mark for Cam only installs with stock gears (this though is very dependant on the Cam you get).
I would say the cost for a complete Cam package will cost around $3K. This will include:
Cam - your choice
Comp 921 springs (only needed with certain cams)
Rollmaster double chain
under drive pully
head studs
160 degree thermostat
ported oil pump
30# Fuel Injectors
Tune
I dont know your Mods, but you will should also have headers with a new cam so figure that into your numbers. Oh yeah you might need a new clutch too the stock one is very iffy over 400RWHP.....

I have 390 gears, ram air, TPIS long tube headers with out cats and a Coursa Touring addition cat back exhaust. Could you recomend a good cam to buy and where to get it? I drive the car on weekends only but it still has to be reliable. I would like to be able to here the cam though!
i have the g5x3 cam, kooks headers, and that other stuff that wicked weasel said(except,i don't know about the ported oil pump)from ECS,and i dynoed at 392 rwhp on their dyno w/3:42's out back.at carlisle i dynoed at 361.i think carlisle's dyno was off a ton, because 5 or 6 of us,if not more, were off by a bunch.the cam stuff cost me 3 grand.

ECS is having good success with the G5X3 (and lucky for you they are less than 1 hour away). They have done many of these cams some with and some without Heads. They are use to the setup so they can tune your car to be very streetable.
I would recommend a Cam kit. That will include everything you need. Places like ECS have done so many of these that they know what is needed to make your car reliable and streetable. If you don't get the kit then you might miss something or add somethign you don't need.
As you mentioned you should hear and see what a Cam car is like before doing it. My car runs great and many people are amazed how well the car runs with the size cam that is in the car, but it does run like a cam car now. It has some lope to it and it is much louder. With the air on it can rock and roll a bit, but still nothing to be concerned about. Maybe come to a vette outing or to the Corvette challenge then you will see many different cam setups.
As far as being reliable I would say a H/C car is very reliable. There are many cars running different kinds of cams without issue.
