my baja filter was not oiled upon delivery.dry as could be and no redish color.PJ-1 is sticky as hell and catches all particals
I don't know about the Baja filter but, all the standard Vararam filters come pre-oiled and you do not want to add any oil to it. As you will over-oil it and the excess will end up all over your MAF sensor and screw it up. The only time you would need to oil it is after you clean it. And again make sure you don't over-oil it. One to two light thin coats should do the trick.
Here's an analogy. Take an ordinary bath sponge and blow air through it and see how much air comes out the other side. Then take that sponge and soak it in water until it's saturated....then try blowing air through it and see how much air comes out the other side. Then wring out the sponge so it's just damp and put air through it again. You can even do this by putting the sponge to your mouth and trying to inhale which would be more like what your engine is doing. The point being, a drier sponge lets more air through but possibly more particles that could be detrimenal to your engine. Consider where you live and in what type of environment you drive in. Too much oil and you'll kill airflow and performance as well as damage the MAF. The right amount of oil keeps smaller particles from getting into your engine as well as preventing damage to the MAF. Personally, a good paper element will provide the maximum air flow while keeping damaging particles out of the engine without affecting components like the MAF sensor. So what if you have to replace it more often, they're much less expensive, even if you shorten the recommended replacement period. I'm looking for a cold air induction system as well but would prefer something that uses a good paper element. Have you looked at the Callaway honker or the one made by MTI? Just some options for you to consider.
No I don't but if you get on the Callaway site (do a google search using Callaway) you'll see it. What I really like about their system is that it uses a ram air effect that you already have occurring on the car. The air dam on the car forces the air to enter an enclosed area to cool the rad. This system uses this effect to ram air into the cold air duct. Any system that uses the cooler outside air as opposed to the heated under hood air will help the engine make more power. Even 90degre outside air is a lot cooler than 180degree underhood air and that will make a difference in power. Their system is not the least expensive but it does come complete and is a lot easier to install than some others.
newbie question; so are we saying to buy the Vararam system but change the filter that comes with it to the more popular and better protecting K+N filter?
Thank you.
I have the V1 on for about 7000 miles actually that's 2 years for me
I checks last month, and the filter was a little dirty, but the MAF and TB was clean. I have the Z06 screen, but ive been thinking about taking them off.
If I were to do it again, I think Id go with the blackwing and not have to worry about it in the back of my head

I too have not had any problems with my Vararam but, I just lost the whole front of the car in an accident and I'm thinking about going to the blackwing just to keep things simple and not worry about it.
Does your Callaway Honker use any kind of duct or scoop inside the radiator shroud? I ask because I have a trans cooler in front of my radiator so space is limited.
For example, the Breathless Vortech will not fit my car because the scoop inside the shroud hits the trans cooler.
Does the Callaway Honker protrude below the shroud?
I have had the Vararam B2 (purchased January 2005 from LAPD) installed since February of this year. Every 5K miles or so I clean it. Before I installed the Z06 screens, I used to get leaves and stuff at the filter. Here are pictures of the latest cleaning. I have the K&N, but just haven't gotten around to doing the install; the results show I don't need to hurry either.
Intake area pre-filter -- all kinds of sand, dirt etc.
Outside of filter -- dusty and stuff collected
Inside of filter -- clean
Inside Throttle Body -- pretty clean, remember the bypass hose attaches after the filter
Any kind of foam type filter needs oil, or the only thing you will filter out is bugs. I have a brand new Vararam that I haven't installed yet just because they are coming out with a new filter that is similar to the K&N made by Green, and I want to wait for it. The filter that comes with the Vararam seems almost completely dry. Rubbing my hands over only showed a slight sheen. Also it's not very dense foam. I just don't trust it myself. Now if I had Chrome piston rings in the motor, then I wouldn't worry about it so much. But for all of you that is worried about the stock filter, and the non-perfect fitting K&N, there should be a NEW filter from Vararam anytime now. I wouldn't be surprised this week.
