Default A4 Transmission Problems :(

On my way home from work today I was on the freeway and floored the throttle....The car down shifted and shot forward as usual...but it never up shifted. When it got to the redline I let up...but it wouldn't shift into a higher gear. Soon it did go into OD...but when I slowed down and the accellerated it wouldn't shift into a higher gear untill I let up on the throttle (a lot). Now sometimes it will shift and sometimes it wont. I dropped it off at the dealer on the way home.

Has anyone had this happen to them??

FYI my car is only lightly modded.... It is a '99 with about 60K miles. It has long tube headers, an x pipe, catback exhaust, cole air intake, and the computer has been reworked a little . It also has a window vallet...which isn't a performance mod..but I mention it because it is tied into the electrical system.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Sorry for the dissapointment. That sucks. Been there and done that.. The week link in these transmissions are the clutch paks. 2-3 and 3-4. Mine went out at around 40000 miles. Same problem as you described. Dealership replaced the clutch paks under warranty thank God($1200). About 1 month later I lost 2nd gear completly. The dealership then replaced the entire transmission under warranty. These A4 transmissions will not hold up very well under hard use or modifications that put you over 350 lbs of rwtorque. Crashed 94 is one of the best at rebuilding and upgrading them to take the extra abuse. As soon as my warranty expires, I will have him build me a new one... Good Luck

Thanks for the info. I knew that this was going to be an expensive problem. Although I have got to say that this is the first thing that has broken on the car in 60K miles....That's not bad considering the excitement the car has provided me.

Got some bad news yesterday. The dealer told me that the "band" had broken....what ever that means....and that the transmissions was "gone".....and that it couldn't be rebuilt! I sure didn't expect that. Has anyone else "Blown" their transmission?

WELL I LOST MINE AFTER 4 PASSES AT MILAN DRAGWAY HERE
In Michigan
The key word in the above quote is (Rodney Crashed 94)
Give him a call ,it could only be a solenoid, or a re-build any way you will have it done right

I think your dealer is trying to pull one on you , and make you buy a new transmission . even with a broken band , the transmisson can be rebuilt . that was the case with my family conversion van , and not the vette , but it was rebuilt by a local trans shop $ 1200.00 , and several long trips later , still runs like a top . If I remember correctly , the van lost all gears except for first and overdrive . get a second opinion by your local trans shop .

unless there is a hole in the case or some other MAJOR problem, the trans can always be rebuilt
get a FLP and forget about ever grenading one again

Had a few different transmissions in my car with different combinations. Get someone else to look at it. It can always be rebuild ! I know. It could be the converter.

Good Luck !
