Here's my dilemma.
Called dealer to have column lock recall done on '99 A4 vert.
Dealer checks VIN and says it was done in 2001 for original owner.
However, the locking plate is still in the car...so now what do I do?
The service bulletin in the STICKY doesn't address 1999 A4s. Why is that? HELP!!?

Reason: spelling
My Euro 1999 vette was recalled in 2001 for modification. It was recalled again this year campaign # 04006B. I think you'll find this is the one that removes the locking plate on US models.
There was like a 3 segment recall. You could have only one part of it. make an appointment at your dealer and ask them to check and preform the entire recall.
The steering wheel locks when I remove the key? How you doin Rich?
IF your steering wheel locks after the car is shut off---you (the previous owner) did not have the recall "fix" done properly for the A4 C5. Your wheel should turn WITH the key out of the ignition if the recall was done right. As noted above---Take the car to Chevy and have then take care of the problem... Good luck.
Thanks Bill.
I left the car at the dealer this afternoon. Their records indicate that the harness was installed in '01 but nothing about removing the lock plate. I guess I'll find out tomorrow what the ststus is.

Installing the harness without removing the lockplate is obviously worthless.
The smaller plate to replace the lockplate comes with the Harness K kit from GM. The original dealer must have a pile of them somewhere.
Day Three....
Dealer calls this morning. Tells me the lock-plate had been replaced with another one and the steering wheel locks just fine.
And my differential seal(s) will cost $588 to replace.
I tellem - do nothing, I'm on my way to get my car!
It's not only the dealer, GM is just as bad. I've been on the phone all afternoon with the dealer and GM. They're all idiots. I'll have updates on Monday...I hope. But this is what I've learned to a certainty:
All of the A4 recalls disable the lock including the 2001 version 01044. This Forum is still the best source of accurate information.
Monday the dealer and GM will determine the next course of action. Stay tuned.
