Default Anyone else make a 2 piece timing cover ?

When doing my cam I was going to put a two piece timing cover on to make it easier to swap in the future.
QTP
QTP has one but the price is way out of my budget. ($425)
Any others out there ?

I looked at this unit at Carlisle. It is hogged out of billet and is a high quality unit. I know it doesn't deter the price, but it is a very solid piece of gear. There was one other, don't remember who makes it, but I think it was basically a "cut" stock unit.

I have heard that crankcase does not produce that much pressure. The front and rear cover gaskets are designed to hold/seal about 8 psi. Based on that, how hard would it be to modify a stock cover into two pieces and then have some type of seal between the them? I think there could be a real good market for the C5 people.

nastyperformance.com sells one for $275. Sidestep sent me this pic a while back.

They also sell some nice billet stuff like fuel rails, valve covers and more. The do intake stuff such as piping and custom sheet-metal intake manifolds too.

PM member leaftye, he sent me info on another cover in the past.

There is some one who cuts the factory cover and welds on two flanges that you bolt together. It was a lot cheaper than the QTP solution.

If it fits, is strait and does not leak It's a steal. To fab that cover up with out a permanent jig would burn at least 6 hr.

It is only $75 to cut and weld, the $200 is for knowing exactly where to cut!

Seriously, I think that does include a new front cover which would probably run $75-$100. Plus it looks like it comes with the gasket which is about $20 and the seal another $15 so it don't look all that bad. I'm sure they are making money but I doubt they are getting rich. I don't see how there is enough room down there to fit the big flange. The bolts on the back of the water pump sticks into the recesses on front of the cover, not a lot of room down there. I guess they know exactly where to put the flanges so they will fit.

Our peice is made from aircraft aluminum and its stronger than a factory piece. The other is a knock off of our idea before we where finished with our piece.

Our cover is larger allowing for our high volume oil pump which is second to know. If anyone has any questions feel free to call us.

Will either one fit a double roller timing chain setup? I don't think the original QTP one did... Also, can you see the dot on the crank gear if the lower unit is bolted on?

I recently installed the QTP unit on a 383 LS1 I just finished dyno testing (results coming soon), and I have to tell you it worked flawlessly, looked great, and saved me a crap load of time swapping cams on the dyno. The fit and finish was excellent and it looks the part. I will never build another engine (that I plan on testing) without one. Assuming you are looking for a situation that helps make cam swaps a breeze, it is definitely one of those "must have" options. I think the looks alone (all billet) are worth the difference versus the modified stocker....at least at the current "spread" between the two. Seems both are capable of getting the job done, however, which is obviously the most important aspect of the purchase.

I have cut the stock cover in a 'V' pattern starting evenly from each side between the two side bolts and down to just above the pulley. I used a band saw to do this. I left the surfaces with the rough band saw cut marks to enhance the final seal used. I also degreesed both sides of the gap with lacquer thinner. The cool thing about this is there is enough slop in the upper half bolt holes that the saw curf closes to almost nothing for a gap. I installed the lower half on the engine and used silicone seal gasket maker and pushed the top half down on the lower half such that the silicone squeeze leaves an even cured bead on both sides of the split line. This has worked perfectly and is easily separated with an exacto knife. Best of all it was a free mod and no welding was required. I can send jpg pic's to anyone that wants to see what it looks like.

Yes they will , I'm running the QTP cover with a top adjustable double roller chain, but be careful, PM me if you need details. End result is you can simply adjust the cam, and/or replace the cam, and run a double roller chain! A double roller chain will NOT work with their HV oil pump.

It is easy to see the timing marks if you add another dimple to the lower gear. I simply sit the gear in the drill press and made an extra dimple between the two gears and in front of the factory mark both facing up. Here you can see the one between the two gears. The gear is massive with the oil pump drive built on, it won't weaken the gear at all, and it only takes a very little dimple to make it easy to see.
