Default Meziere Water Pump Problems....

I installed a Meziere electric water pump on my 2000 vert today. The water temp is fluctuating between 195 and 230 degrees and at times even goes higher. I also installed a 160 degree thermostat at the same time. I did not make any other modifications. I don't believe this is normal or at least this isn't what I was expecting. Any help would be appreciated.

160 degree stat? Wow, way too low. Especially for a Boise, ID. winter. I doubt you see any performance gain from a 160 stat and the car will run weird. The car doesn't even go into open loop mode until 187, I believe. Someone else can chime as to why this is important.

To answer your question about the pump, my guess the problem is the new stat you put in. Are you sure it works? It sounds like it is not opening. Your cooling fans are causing the temps to flucuate. With such a low stat temp, you should never see 180 or higher!

Also, make sure your pump is getting correct voltage, or it will run slower than normal.

I know it sounds simple but make sure your coolant is full and there is no air in the system.

Check this out if you have not already done so:

Meziere C5 LS1 Install Instructions

"Now that the old thermostat is removed, let's switch tasks and get out your NEW thermostat. The Meziere pump uses an old small block chevy style thermostat to control coolant flow. To keep the electric mechanism of the pump healthy, we need to drill some small holes in the thermostat to keep coolant flowing even when the thermostat is shut. This will also help get the air out of the system once we fill the radiator with coolant later.

Start out using a 1/16" drill and drill into the thermostat away from the 2 support arms on the thermostat. Once you've got the two small holes drilled, go back in with a 3/16" drill bit and enlarge the two holes. Use a screwdriver or sand paper to break off any metal splinters that you may have created during the drilling."

Hope this helps.
John

Default What I have done now....

I have checked the wiring on the pump. I originally had it wired with a relay. Now I have it wired so it comes on any time the key is on. I did this to make sure the pump was actually working.

I did drill the holes in the thermostat when I installed it originally.

I guess I will replace the 160 with a 180. I believe the problem might be with the thermostat even though it was new and came with the pump.

If you have not reprogrammed your fan temperatures yet you will still climb up around 230 when your sitting still.

I also run a 160 thermostat with no problems. I don't drive it in cold weather though. But it runs great and gets 25+mpg.

Check the pump motor ground, if it isn't good then the pump will not pump to capacity or not at all. Mine didn't have a good ground and it eventually overheated.

Default Ground is good...

I completely rewired the pump and I am sure it is a good ground. I originally used a relay but when I encountered problems, I went the simple route to get it right.

Again Thanks, to all. I ordered a set of Supermaxx headers today for install when I return. I fly internationally and will be gone for about 10 days.

I guess I will go ahead and order a Diablo Predator to set the fans. It will come in handy later any way.

Default Can you put the thermostat in wrong?

I am not home (out of the country) but was wondering if you can actually put in a thermostat backwards? I am wracking my brain trying to figure out why I am having the fluctuation problems with the temp of my car after the install of the Meziere electric water pump.

I have ordered a new 180 thermostat and also have a Predator, to change the fans, on the way. Hopefully this will cure my problems.

the water pump only circulates the water... the water pump does not do any cooling.
Cooling is the product of heat exchange via the radiator.... the numbers you are seeing are typical of a stock cooling sytem.
Lowering the coolant is done via heat exchange through the difference in air temp passing over the fins and the velocity of the air...
If the fans are not running, there is no wind shear no velocity..
The C5 is a bottom feeder meaning it sucks air from six inches off the ground.... when it is 80 degrees out side, surface temps can be in the 100+ range... there is little cooling at that temp.
by lowering the stat temperature, you can lower the fan "ON" settings to get a jump on cooling.... I would not recommend a 160 stat for the winter.

Default Fixed my Problem....

I fixed my problem with the Meziere Water Pump. I replaced the 160 thermostat with a 180. Then I completely rewired the pump from the beginning. I used a relay again. The wiring was the problem as it is working perfectly now....must have had something loose or not grounded as well as required.

Just received my set of Supermaxx Headers and will be installing them tomorrow.

Thanks to all for their help....the Forum is a great place only because of the great people associated with it.
