Gear change or stall
I have been thinking about changing my gear ratio in my C5 auto from a suckee 2.73 to 3.42. Someone suggested adding a "stall". What is this? What does it cost to buy and install? Is it better than changing gears? What are advantages/disadvantages?

Its a torque converter. If you are goning to be swapping the gears, you minus well install an after market TC since the entire driveline is removed from the car. Here is a good website that describes some of the questions you are asking.

if you are eager for a higher stall TC, then doing gears at the same time is very dollar smart
It should cost about $300.00-$400.00 to swap the T/C. To swap gears and the T/C figure on $500.00-$600.00.
Just do it very carefully when lowering the rear cradle and watch the clearence between the firewall and intake manifold.
3.42 with a stock converter will put miles of smiles on your face.
3.42 with a stall converter will put a real hurt on your wallet.
JMHO it's the first change I did to my 98 A4 now with about 40,000 miles on it with a Procharger and still the stock trans.

I look for the least expensive thing to replace and use that for the fuse in the driveline.
Besides 99.9% of my driving is on the street!
