Just a quick question for those of you who might know. Where is the location of the oil pressure sensor? How long will this take to change and basically what does it entail? Thanks for the help, Dan.
Common problem. The BRILLIANT engineers at GM put the sensor underneath the intake at the back of the engine. I'm replacing mine, but it is during a complete engine swap for a forged motor. I would imagine that it is around a 4 hour job, if your handy with a wrench.
I replaced mine. Took about 2 hours. You have to take the intake manifold off to get to it. You can leave the fuel lines connect as you just have to move it forward a little to get to the sensor. When you buy the sensor, get the special socket that it takes to put it in and have a torque wrench that will do in/lbs. I for got what the torque was on the manifold but it was not much. I reused the manifold O-rings on mine as they were in good shape. I think a set of those is about $90. I got the oil pressure sender for the local AC/Delco guy. I think is was about $30.

$30 for the sensor and the time to remove/install the intake...
Definetely a good suggestion to be careful about dirt when moving the intake manifold. When I changed my sensor I was amazed at the amount of dirt that gets between the intake and the valley cover. There were leaves in there that I couldn't imagine how they got in. With the manifold off it's a great opportunity to do some serious cleaning in the engine compartment.
When I had the sensor go on my previous C5 I couldn't believe what a dumb place to put the sensor. They could have relocated it to a more accessible place. It's still in the same place as previous generation small blocks. On my street rod's 350 it's right next to the distributor in the same location on the rear of the block. However, it would probably take less than 5 minutes to change it and secondly, its never had to be replaced.
What are the symptoms? I have a 99 coupe that reads zero with the key off and pegged past 80 once it's started. Is the sensor causing this?
These were my symptoms. I changed the pressure sensor today with a borg-warner brand, got the part from o'reiley's for $30 and a deep socket for $9.35. Took me about 3 hours total. I spent a little extra time cleaning and was not in a hurry. There was a thread with good instructions, wish I could find it again. There is a little hose in the back of the intake manifold that is a liitle tricky, I had my wife hook that up since she has much smaller hands.
?how do you know when to change a sensor;ok what i mean is do they just go out or do you get to hi or to low oil reading,or does it stop working all together????????????
Speedy,
If you haven't already replaced your sensor, the guys have given you good advise about how to do it. I would just emphasize the comment about the little air conditional vacuum line that comes off the rear side of the intake. It will pull out of the elbow fitting when you slide the intake forward and if you are blessed with short fingers it will take a small act of congress to get the thing reconnected correctly. As mentioned by others, somone with long skinny fingers or a extra long pair of needle nose pliars are essential things to have when you get around to reassembly. If you can hear the dreaded hissing sound when you restart your engine, you didn't get it plugged back in correctly and your air conditioning will not function properly.
