Default Hurst Shifter Again ;)

I know many have complained of how stiff they are. I too was not real happy with the force it took to pull over to first, and push over to reverse. Not real hard, but not easy, if say my daughter was to drive it, which she does on a rare occasion.

Any way, so I thought why not just use the soft big spring, no small spring? I just tried this, and it is easier to shift.

Now, can anyone tell me why this is a bad thing? Only thing I can think of is it will not center quite as quickly, if you are speed shifting.

I know that Hurst says to mix and mach to your preference, and says nothing about useing only one spring. So what would be the problem? I dont see why you could not just leave them out all togather. Might be defeatiing some of the purpose for it though .....

So what do y'all think?

No offence, but you might want to try a Ripper.

The soft/outer big spring has been in my Hurst for over 2 years with no problems. By the way, NO missed 2nd to 3rd shifts either!

I felt the same way you did. But after driving it for 2 weeks straight, the shifter got softer. After 6 months, I can shift it now with no effort.

And since i left the factory springs in there, it pulls to the center easy so when i powershift to 3rd, i always mak it into the gate without thinking about it.

Put the normal springs back in and give it some driving time.

I had the stock springs in for two years and finally got tired of it... I do race the car both HPDE's and and 1/4 mile and still wanted easier shifting ( drive my car in the streed 3/4 days a week ) A few weeks back I removed the stock springs and put in the softer outer springs only and I love it. Still good centering force for shifting hard, but much easier to shift.

This thread is just what I've been looking for - I had LPE shorten my stock shifter, and although the throw is shorter, it still doesn't hold a candle to the Hurst in my ZR-1. NOw, I've heard horror stories about the Hurst for the C5 (too much effort etc) - should I get a Hurst for the C5, and if so, should I go with the stock springs, or only the big soft spring?

There is a fair amount of effort on my Hurst in the ZR-1, but not to much effort. I actually like the amount of effort on my shortened stock shifter, just don't like the fact that the throw is so long. You guys know - what do you think?

I've tried both spring setups in my Hurst. Ended up with the factory spring setup and it did get easier to shift over time. The first few months are a test when going to reverse but, it's all good now. When I went to the single spring I noticed a clicking noise while shifting and that is the real reason I went back to the factory setup.

SO - if I've got this right - you have the Hurst shifter, with the springs that came in the car from the factory, correct? I'll be having LPE install this for me, and I need to be specific - thanks!

No. as far as i know the factory shifter has no springs. when you buy the hurst it comes installed with the harder springs and you can change them out to the softer springs (which come with the hurst)

Yes, this is correct.
The GM shifter does not come with any springs.
The springs are only included with the Hurst shifter. It comes with mutliple springs so you can tailor the shifting effort to your liking. The factory springs I was referring to are the Hurst Factory springs. The shifter comes with a Hurst factory setting and you can adjust them from that point; either easier or harder.
Hope that clears it up for you.

On a side note. I have also tried the Ripper shifter and the Hurst is a better unit and also allows for the spring effort adjustment which the Ripper unit does not.

Thanks buddy - that helps alot. The only thing that is holding me back is that my shortened stock shifter is rattling and noise free - can I assume that the Hurst will be quiet as well - or will it be rattly? My Hurst in the 90 is quiet as a mouse! I really want a shorter action - the shortened stock shifter is still just a little too long a throw. Thanks again guys!

i put a hurst in my vert and loved it, wife hated it, i took all of the springs out to make it easier for her. i didnt notice much of a difference, but it made her sorta happy.
3 years no springs, no problem, try it out. if you want to get rid of it, pm me, i need one for my frc, and i shortened my stock one if you want to try that.

I think I'll test out a hurst on a car at LPE and make my decision from there. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the replies.

And to think I had thought of something new.

I have read other posts about the Hurst shifter, with complaints, and never saw anyone mention this in them?

Guess it was left up to them to come up with the idea? LOL! As it seems all of you have, but never mentioned it. Or maybe I just missed out reading them?

I just installed my Hurst. Effort is a *bit* higher but it either gets easier with use, or I just got used to it. Either way, I LOVE the way the gears just click when engaged. I have the Hurst installed, stiffer springs as I can get a bit excited when shifting and just wanted a wider margin of safety.

I'm running the softer springs (small & large) and like it. At first I thought it was a little stiff but it's great now. I'm still using the stock **** BTW.

Default It gets easier

I agree that it gets easier with use. Wife hated it when I installed, but since it loosened up, she's not complaining. I still have the standard springs in it. After 3 weeks its considerably easier. SO I've delayed playing with the springs.

Initial install used the Hurst ball. I noticed that her little hand was struggling so I put the stock **** on the Hurst and she was also a lot happier as she could get her hand around it.

since its her daily driver I have to keep her happy. The mods are my fun time.
