Default Active Handling Malfunction

I saw an older post on this subject and wondered if there was an update. Here's the story:

After four years of normal operation, my 2001 C5 started giving me a "Service Active Handling System" code. It only did this once per cycle. It would disable my Active Handling. I couldn't turn it off or on manually. When I restart the engine, all was well again. It only did this on longer trips. Always between 35 - 40 miles into a trip on the Interstate. Took it to the dealer who said there was a service bulletin out about it, and they would reprogram my ABS.

After they reprogramed it, no more codes. HOWEVER, the left side brakes are applied now without warning. Same circumstances, between 35-40 miles into a trip. "Active Handling" in the display and the car jerks hard to the left. I was going 75MPH when this happened and the car ended up on the shoulder. I was very lucky. Dealer says nothing is wrong. I think not. The old post referenced "Evil Hal" and boy does that fit. I baby this car and now it wants to kill me?!?! Thanks for any info you have.

Default Update

Wanted to post an update. I found two complaints of the exact same issue on the NHTSB web site. I submitted my own as well. REF#'s 10139571, 10124963, & 757075.

This seems like a real safety issue to me, so I encourage others who have experienced to problem to file complaints. I read on a Z06 owners site where cars were wrecked over this issue. They "fixed" it by unplugging the sensors (steering, yaw, etc.) Not a fix as far as I'm concerned. I want to AHS to work.

I am currently working with a dealer on escalating the problem. (Good luck, right?!) But I also work for a GM supplier and have contacts at GM if this doesn't work out. I'll let you know what I find and if you have experienced this problem or heard of it before I would sure like to hear from you. Thanks!!

I was the guy who filed NHTSA Complaint 10124963. It turned out to be a steering wheel position sensor. My Mr. Goodwrench never figured it out, but I found a Mr GW in San Antonio on crossedflags.com who knew what it was right away. The SWPS fails but never throws a code. It will give normal readings through most of the range of motion, but develops dead spots that will throw momentary spikes in the readings. Apparently if the mechanic calls the help desk in Detroit they will automatically tell him to check the SWPS, the problem has become so prevalent.

As an aside, I know a guy at NHTSA in complaint investigation. They take these investigations seriously, but need a critical mass of complaints. I encourage you to file a complaint so that we can get mechanics informed and get a good fix in place.

THANKS!! I was wondering how I could get in touch with one of the guys who filed those complaints. Exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to print your post and take it to my dealer in the morning. So did they do the repair as a "silent recall", or did you have to pay for it? I don't mind if I have to, but if they did it once for free I want them to do the same for me. Thanks again!!
