Should I be smelling the tale tale bad cat rotting egg smell at intersections and whatnot with 34k on the clock? Seems early for this problem, but my gas milage is a little low too. The car is an '02 Z.

thanks guys

Sounds (or smells) like your catalytic converter. It seems like you should be getting a service engine warning.

+1 Nothing smells quite so foul as a bad cat (or one breaking in...).

From what I've seen HOT cats smell, not necessarily bad ones. Driven hard they will heat up and emit that smell. Unless you are running pig rich I doubt you'd need one this early, especially if your are stock.

I went thru a similar problem at 35K. Thought it was the cat (7 years old), but it turned out to be my Optima Red top. The smell was very strong in the garage after a drive. I popped open the hood and there was a sizeable bubble on the top of the battery.

Optima replaced it no-charge, problem smell went away.

I had the same smell last year.
Turned out to be a tank of gas purchased at an out of town station was the culprit. The gas had a high sulphur content.
Next tank of fuel and the smell went away.

If you smell sulpher it's the cats doing their job. If a car runs rich the cats heat up trying to burn off the excess fuel. Get you AFR read at a shop and I'll bet it is way rich.

At the shop that I would take my car to, a dodge dakota truck was having the same problem. The smell was really strong. What ended up as being the culprit was the cats. They punched them out and smell went away. Just my 2 cents.

Yup, Just the cats burning off. They will do it from time to time depending on how hot they get and how rich you run. I get it every couple of months or so.

Actually? you might be running a tad rich.~~Not a bad thing! Actually? My tune is pretty close hanging to the rich side. It could be driving style But then again I am running the new 3" Random Tech Cats and long tube ceramic coated headers~~~Moral of the story? "They all do it" or thinking about it "how often do you go WOT"

As someone stated above consider it a fart

Its like 100K. Sounds like cats to me, have GM check it out and fix it for free, or at least check that before spending any money
