Default 342 rear end question???????????????

I just put a 342 gear in my 2004 auomatic. At 60mph my rpm are 2200 and at 70 they are 2500. Does that seem high or about right???

Default 3.42

That sounds about right might be just a tad high.

I bet you think the first time you drove it you thought it was a different car?

If you have 3.42 gears you should be at 2150 RPM locked up in 4th gear at 70 MPH. You should not be at 2500 RPM at 70 MPH if your car is shifting into 4th gear and locking up. It sounds to me like your car might not be locking up in 4th assuming you really have 3.42s. FWIW my car has 3.73s and I am at only 2350 RPM at 70 MPH locked up in 4th gear.

in 3rd gear - doing 75mph, you should see 3400 rpm with the A4. This will verify that you indeed have a 3.42 rear ratio.

who did your reprogram ?

Just doubled check and that is high. At 75 you should be at 2250 rpm.

Maybe he's got small (real) tires. Seriously, has anyone questioned the tire sizes? Also, is it true that the 6 speeds need no re-cal on the speedo? I have heard that the A4 cars do, but not the 6 speeds. Please advise, though a little off topic. Sorry.

neither do. There is no speedo error on the C5 caused by rear axle ratio changes - A4 or manual shift.

With stock tires (26.7" Dia.) in D (4th gear) at 70 mph, a 3.42 gear C5 will produce approx. 2100 rpm's...If your reading are much higher than that, the tires are not 26.7" Dia., you don't have a 3.42 gear or your tach is wrong....Good luck in sorting it out.
