Default Noise at driver side rear (driveline??)

OK, if I was still driving my C3 or C4 and heard this noise I would without question say it was a dry U-joint. I get home open the door, slowly release the clutch and hear pop, pop. I put it in reverse , slowly release the clutch and the same pop, pop. I put it on stands to pull the rear wheel to check for grease fitting in the U-joint................................wha t's this? No half shafts with standard U-joints on the ends. This is not what I was expecting. So what is this bad-U-joint sound I keep hearing?

Well, the half shafts use CV type joints, as opposed to the old style 4-point u-joints. Still, the noise you describe could be a dry joint. Is there any evidence that a boot is cracked and the lube slung out of it?

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

No wear or tears on the boots. I am not too familiar with CV joints and their characteristics. I swear this sure sounds like an old style dry u-joint.

Thanks for the reply. Hate to do it, but may be forced to take to the dealer for this one.

If you can get your hands on a 34mm axle socket, check the torque on the rear spindle nuts (108 ft/lbs). I had what sounded like a clunk and thought it may be the rear end, but turned out to be the spindle nuts had loosed just enough to make the noise.
