Friends 99 Coupe passenger side window won't roll down a clicking can be heard so it leads me to believe it's mechanical and not the control mod. Dealer quoted him $400. I told him I would ask you guys ( I think the internet scares him) what you think it might be and if it would be worth DIY. He is mechanically inclined.
not sure about the vette, but same thing happened in my 2000 GMC.it is a cable and pully system,my cable broke.had to buy the whole unit, motor, cable, pullies comes as one unit just remove and replace.if i remember it was under 200 bucks.
Sounds mechanical to me also. The C4's had a notched plastic strap that ran the windows up and down. This would get stripped out and a new plastic strap would have to be put in. It's a lillte hard to picture unless you have seen one. Sounds like this problem may be something similiar. On the C4's, it was a DIY job. The C5 window mechanism doesn't look complicated, but I haven't had one apart.
Before spending a lot of money on this, try slamming the door while depressing the the window switch. This is a very common problem when windows motors are not used often. I had this problem with both windows but got them working using this technique. I now try to operate them on a regular basis to prevent this from happening. I have had no further problems with this in the last 2 years.
Pull the codes. If it's the switch, there will be a code for it.. Right window up switch....B2203 Right window down switch..B2205
I had a similar experience,i was out of town, wife calls and says driver window is stuck down,i asked if she could hear clicking, she said "yes".So i ordered a new GM window regulator/motor.(one unit)...for $325 bucks.
Took me about 1 hour to swap the regulator out.Guess what,it was the switch,$179.00.And i had the stored code for the switch. So clicking doesn't mean it's the motor like one would think. My fault for assuming the problem before checking it myself.
I actually still have the brand new regulator and motor and receipt(driver side) i'll sell for $275 including shipping if someone needs one.
This has happened to my 2001 three times in the last 16 months. I am waiting, waiting, waiting for parts now. I would like to understand what the problem is and how to fix it. Major Guard will not cover this forever, though GM should.

Ask whoever is doing the work to make sure there not replacing with rebuilt ones off ebay, but new ones...his case is different, his could still be a switch, codes will verify for him.
Hey Jim
Thanks again for yesterday. Had a great time on the run and at the BBQ afterwards. I met a great bunch of guys. I sent my buddy with the window problem a copy of this thread and a code list and he's going to check it out and get back to me (he's working today). He lives right over in Spring Valley. So we might take you up on it. Sounds like a good excuse to get together for a Banzai Run. He wanted to make the run yesterday but had to work. His car has a few mods headers, exhaust, intake and he likes to drive it.
I have the same problem on both doors.
I hear a clicking sound in the door(s) and you can see the battery voltage dip a little on the DIC (as if the motor is drawing current and trying to turn).
You guys that had this replaced, is it a mechanical problem where the motor mechanism gets bound up?

Thanx.
Mine was clickin away too,but it was the switch not the regulator/motor.One piece design.Pulling the codes will tell you if it's the switch.(the codes i listed in my previous post). If no codes on the switch, take the door panel off and take a look. It's a pretty simple system, maybe some have broken cables, some have bad motors, some have bad switches.Heres a pic of the whole window motor and regulator.
